In Chad, Oxfam has been carrying out an emergency response to both help Chadians displaced by internal violence, and refugees from Darfur, Sudan.

Latest: West Africa Food Crisis

Working with displaced people

Ongoing violence in the neighbouring Darfur region of Sudan has forced nearly a quarter of a million refugees over the border into Chad. At the same time, internal instability within Chad itself has seen local rebel groups step up their operations, causing mass displacement.

  • Some 250,000 refugees from Darfur are placing an immense strain on Chad’s already scarce natural resources
  • 180,000 people have been displaced within Chad due to internal fighting

Around four million people in Chad and Darfur — more than half the region’s population — are now dependent on vital humanitarian aid.

How Oxfam is helping

We have been carrying out an emergency response in Chad since 2004. Our focus is on water, sanitation and public health. We are also working to reach the growing numbers of people who desperately need our help in camps for refugees and displaced people.
