The Co-operative Bank gives customers a way to help end poverty as they shop, and raises over £5 million for Oxfam.

The Co-operative Bank is well-known for its ethical approach to business and as a fervent campaigner for a better society. It is therefore no surprise that in 1995 Oxfam and The Co-operative Bank formed an exciting new relationship that has been helping to improve the lives of the poorest communities around the world ever since.

With more than four million customers, it was important for The Co-operative Bank to work with a charity whose cause would really resonate with its customers and colleagues, and to make it as easy as possible for its stakeholders to translate their desire to donate money into a reality. It was with this in mind that The Co-operative Bank decided to launch the Oxfam credit card, empowering customers to help end extreme poverty just by spending.

£5.6m raised to help those in poverty

The impact of the donations made to Oxfam through this relationship has been significant, with nearly £5m raised by Oxfam credit card holders so far.

The initiative has clearly been popular with The Co-operative Bank's customers, with more than 15,000 opting to take out the Oxfam credit card and many more choosing to donate their Current Account rewards. 

The beauty of the Oxfam credit card is that it makes it easy for Co-operative Bank customers to regularly donate just by using their credit cards. Everyday activities such as paying for the weekly shop, or filling up the car with petrol generates a donation which is used to support the valuable work of Oxfam.

In addition donations from The Co-operative Bank's current account switching incentive has raised over £60k.

A win-win

The Co-operative Bank's relationship with Oxfam has been a win-win all round. For Co-operative Bank customers it's a way to support a charity that they're passionate about; for The Co-operative Bank it has given customers another reason to bank with them; and for Oxfam it is helping raise vital funds to support life-changing work around the world.
