Finance Assistant (Oxfam House)


This role is an exciting opportunity to make a difference within one of the world's leading NGOs and to contribute to Oxfam's goal of overcoming poverty and suffering. It offers a chance to gain experience within a fast-paced but friendly office environment in a range of finance and administrative skills. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible and able to offer minimum 2 days per week.

As a volunteer, you will be part of a large and friendly Finance department that provides a complete finance service to the whole of the organisation, addressing financial needs and demands of both internal customers and external stakeholders. Every year Oxfam spends around £390 million - all of which has to be accounted for. Last year we helped Oxfam process £275 million worth of income and donations, pay over 35 000 invoices worth £104 million and supported 52 countries to spend £298 million on charitable activities.

You'll need to offer a minimum of 2 days a week, Mondays to Fridays. 

Key responsibilities:

Financial Management consists of 4 teams: Payments, Payroll and Staff Expenses, Income and Tax & Treasury. We have a pool of volunteers that work across the department, allocated to a specific team at the start of their placement. As a volunteer your tasks may be but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the Payments team with regards to all payments processing.
  • Producing sale invoice requests.
  • Bank reconciliations and recharges.
  • Verifying staff expenditure.
  • Processing and verifying income.
  • Collating and analysis of banking data.
  • Maintaining Supplier information.
  • Chasing expense claims.
  • Invoice processing.
  • Petty cash and making up floats.
  • Completing journals.
  • Filling and archiving.

Skills and competencies:

  • Basic understanding of accounting processes and procedures.
  • Good level of competency in Excel and Word.
  • Good administrative and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Attention to detail.
