Investing in a safer future for disaster prone-communities in Bangladesh
Building on 14 years of experience working in Bangladesh's river basin areas, Oxfam will work with vulnerable communities in the southern coastal belt and the 'chars' (river islands) and the 'haors' (marshland) in the north of the country.
With your support we aim to:
- Improve communities' resilience to natural disasters by helping them to protect homes and assets against flooding, and by providing safe water supplies and sanitation;
- Reduce vulnerability of the poorest people, particularly women, by developing more climate-resilient livelihoods;
- Empower women through leadership training, income-generation and community awareness-raising;
- Enable communities to better understand their rights and demand government support and services.
Who will benefit
Approximately 11,000 people, over 80 per cent of them women, will directly benefit from project activities. Indirectly, a further 33,000 people will benefit from disaster preparedness awareness-raising activities, raised public land, food banks, and the availability of life-saving equipment.
