Assistant Manager Internship (Highgate)


Oxfam Highgate shop is in the heart of the beautiful Highgate, near many touristic attractions and from where you can admire the fine panorama of the City. The shop is a vibrant environment with a multicultural team proud of its success.

Working with Ana Prag the shop manager to develop and implement a series of actions that maximizes the shop's contribution to Oxfam, with a focus on shop revenue and the image of our shop that is at the heart of the community in Highgate.

Frequency: Maximum 3 days a week. Working pattern to be agreed with the shop manager.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist the manager in running the shop operations.
  • Ensure the smooth running of the shop in the absence of the manager and take actions to solve routine problems.
  • Learn the main management systems in a retail environment and the charity retail business
  • Find what can be improved in the shop, and find solution to improve it.
  • Managing donations, stock processing and management.
  • Manage the till and daily reports and provide appropriate customer service.
  • Maximize the income from donations, new products and Gift Aid.
  • Implement Trading Division's accounting policies and banking procedures.
  • To ensure that shop activities reflect Oxfam values and beliefs.
  • Keep up to date with Oxfam's internal communications and share any news with the shop team.

Skills and competencies:

  • Results focused- Ability to contribute to meet objectives/targets with a drive to achieve results.
  • Well organised - Ability to manage a busy workload working in partnership with the Shop Manager and shop teams. Ability to maintain an environment that is safe from hazards and complies with health and safety legislation and Oxfam procedures.
  • Exploiting business resources- sourcing and donation processing, pricing and selection
  • Being customer led- display, merchandising, ordering, selling, customer service
  • Applying commercial judgement- space/sales analysis, budgets, financial controls
  • Developing capability- Ability to communicate Oxfam's purpose effectively to staff, volunteers and the public
  • Thinking and problem solving- ability to plan, analyse and negotiate resolutions and provide advice when required.
