What to expect

"Imagine the fringes of Glastonbury with a tenth of the people."

Mark Gunther, Volunteer Steward

WOMAD is an amazing carpet of clover, with an airstrip, that transforms into a panoply of canvas. Only the earliest of early birds will get to see this complete metamorphosis, or the Oxfam stewards.

Located in these beautiful surroundings is an amphitheatre of cosmopolitan entertainment and subsistence. And that ethos spreads into the stewarding environment to create an excellent festival to volunteer for. And should it be a scorcher then The Radio 3 stage in the woods creates a haven from the beating sun.

A brilliant first festival to gain that big festival experience without having stewarded at a big festival. Imagine the fringes of Glastonbury with a tenth of the people. A veritable cornucopia of music, art and dance. And booze. And nosh. AND a steam funfair!

- Mark Gunther, Oxfam staff member and volunteer steward

WOMAD FAQs

Getting to this festival

The festival site address is Womad, Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, SN16 9DG. The festival site is well sign-posted from the M4. Please ensure that you read the information in your pre festival email regarding which vehicle gate to enter the festival site through.

The nearest train station is Kemble, and last year it cost around £9 to get from Kemble to WOMAD during the show days by taxi.

Please see here for our WOMAD lift share forum.

Stewarding roles at this festival

At WOMAD we cover everything from the entrance gates, campsite patrols, fire towers, music tents to backstage gates and even the children’s fancy dress parade on Sunday afternoon.

The Arrival Shift at this festival

We will need a small team to help with set, registration and crew parking, and they will need to arrive to start their shifts by 11.00am on Wednesday 25th July 2012.

The Late Shift at this festival

As we will be staffing the campsites, we need to stay till all the campers have gone, so the last shift will finish at 15.00 on Monday.

Catering at this festival

At WOMAD, you will use your meal tickets with the Oxfam provided caterer, who will be in our crew camping field.

Please remember to bring your own plate and cutlery, as using these will enable Oxfam and Womad to reduce the amount of waste generated by the festival. Our crew caterer will charge you to cover the cost of supplying you with plates, knives and forks at each meal if you don’t bring your own.

Bringing a campervan/caravan to this festival

If you tick in your application to say you want to bring a campervan, you will be parking your vehicle in the staff camping area. If you are bringing a caravan, you will need to site your caravan, and then move your car off to the staff car park.

PLEASE NOTE: Your campervan/caravan MUST have purpose-built fitted sleeping facilities and either fitted cooking or washing facilities. Any converted vehicles must clearly be live-in vehicles. This does not mean simply a van with a piece of foam cut to size for a bed, and a bucket for washing.

A team of campsite staff and security staff will check that campervans and caravans coming into these fields have bona fide living accommodation.

Bringing a child to this festival

See the festival’s website for up-to-date ticket prices per age group. Children of 13 and under are admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Over 13’s will need to have a Teenage ticket at a cost of £70 and also accompanied by an adult.

Oxfam Festivals’ child policy also applies (see general FAQs), so please include the fact that you want to bring a child on your application form.
