What to expect
"Shambala is a creative, non-commercial, ethical and family-friendly festival with a wild side"
Julia Yarnold, Shambala Stewarding Co-ordinator
Shambala began in 1999, with 150 people in a field with a farmer's trailer covered in tarps for a stage, and one portaloo! It is a creative, non-commercial, ethical and family-friendly festival with a wild side.
There are plenty of things to get involved with - cinemas, workshops, crafts, loads of kids activities, circus performance, talks, sauna, cafes, massive site art, a lovely crowd and a lot of surprises! The festival is completely independent from advertising and sponsorship.
Having never promoted it, Shambala has grown through word of mouth and this year there were 8,000 festival-goers. The festival attracts people of all ages and has a warm and open atmosphere. Shambala aims to be a responsible event; recycling almost all waste, investing in compost toilets, using solar, wind & biodiesel, and carefully selecting traders and suppliers. Shambala has grown consistently year on year and in 2009 was held in a ‘secret location’ in Northamptonshire. I can reveal that it was a beautiful setting in the grounds of a country house with plenty of space for everyone.
If you don’t fancy the big Bank Holiday festivals like Leeds and Reading, Shambala is an ideal relaxed and laid back festival to get involved in.
- Julia Yarnold, Oxfam volunteer steward and co-ordinator
