Campaigns, Policy & Influencing trainee scheme

The world is changing. Oxfam needs to change too. We need new thinking, fresh ideas and diverse insights to help solve the twin crises of inequality and climate change, which are hitting the poorest hardest. This paid trainee scheme is designed to find people from a wide range of backgrounds to join our Campaigns, Policy and Influencing team for an exciting 11-month programme.

Trainees support our Campaigns, Policy and Influencing team in their work to influence decision-makers (like governments and international organisations) to do more to end poverty and suffering in the UK and around the world.

Emma Holt, Trainee Scheme Manager (interim)

"I've recently joined the team and have been so impressed by the skills and enthusiasm of our trainees. It is amazing to see the impact they are having on our campaign, policy and influencing work and I look forward to welcoming two more trainees onto the scheme in 2016.

Aishah Siddiqa, trainee

"The trainee scheme is fantastic for people like myself who have little experience in campaigning or the development sector in general. Since joining in September I have been working on huge issues such as climate change and inequality with highly passionate people.

One thing I love about working here in Oxfam as a trainee is the opportunity to always learn more with the number of training/events available for staff. I am constantly learning lots of new things and growing, in the career sense and on a more personal level, and it's thanks to the wonderful and inspirational people you meet here!"

Sahedul Islam, former trainee

"I came into the scheme with next to no campaign experience. Three months in, I've worked on blog action day, the Even It Up campaign, created videos, written blogs and articles, researched issues, such as Ebola and healthcare. I've even spent a few days in parliament. The experience has been invaluable and what's most exciting is knowing that I've only just started!"

This programme supports trainees to deliver projects, and contribute in other ways to our work, through varied placements in different areas and teams. The scheme also has a structured training programme, covering core skills and campaigning tools, and trainees are supported with their individual development.

Trainees on the scheme can expect to get a good understanding of how a large aid and development organisation works, particularly what Oxfam works on and how we do campaigning, policy and influencing. They do not need any previous work experience in campaigns and policy or the development sector, nor do they need a degree. Through taking part in the programme they have the opportunity to develop general skills, such as project management, communication and research, as well as learn campaigns skills, such as supporter mobilisation, power analysis, policy writing, lobbying & influencing and digital campaigning.

Trainees are based in Oxford and are paid a salary equivalent to an annual salary of £17,215. We currently take four trainees per year, recruited at two moments in the year.
