Celebrate women's achievements

We know there are still huge steps to be made around the world before gender equality is achieved. However, on International Women's Day it is worth remembering and celebrating the fantastic work and achievements women have accomplished.

1918 – Women secure the vote in Germany, Latvia, Austria and Poland,

1940 – 1949 – Women secure the vote in Panama, Dominican Republic, France, Jamaica, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Senegal Liberia, Cameroon, Guatemala, Venezuela, Vietnam, China and others

1948 – The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares that men and women should be treated equally

1960 – Sirimavo Bandaranaike, a Sri Lankan politician, becomes the world’s first elected female prime minister

1975 – Japenese climber Junko Tabei becomes the first woman to climb everest

1988 – Benazhir Bhutto becomes Pakistan’s first female prime minister

2003 – The law against female circumcision is strengthened

2005 – Kuwaiti women are granted the vote and given the right to run for office

2011 - 3 women jointly win the Nobel Peace prize. See our News page for more information.
