Oxfam in Scotland Campaigns
Our campaigning is aimed at building a movement throughout Scotland to help end global poverty and create a fairer world.
We work with a range of partners and networks to raise awareness about poverty and its causes, and to keep pressure on politicians and other opinion formers to take action.
GCAP Scotland Stand Up and Two years ago in Gleneagles G8 leaders got a mandate to make poverty history, but in 2007:
- 5,000 children die every day from drinking dirty water
- a woman dies every minute due to pregnancy or childbirth
- over 5million people living with HIV and AIDS still don't have access to medicine
The global whiteband campaign is urging supporters to Stand Up and Speak Out Against Poverty in 2007. In Scotland, campaigners have come together as part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty to demand:
- trade justice by delivering fair trade rules, and upholding workers' rights
- debt cancellation without harmful strings attached
- more and better aid, including action to tackle HIV and Aids
- firm plans to prevent climate change and address its impact on poor countries
Around the world 80 million children are missing out on primary education, the majority of them girls. This year the Global Campaign for Education is reminding governments that education is a human right and urging them to keep their promises to provide free, compulsory basic education for all. Schools across Scotland are getting involved in the Join Up! Send my friend to school campaign. For more information go to www.sendmyfriend.org
As the links between poverty and global warming become more apparent Oxfam in Scotland will campaign with partners to Stop Climate Change. No one will be immune from the effects of climate change but despite the industrialised world being the biggest culprit when it comes to environmental pollution, people in developing countries are hardest hit by the effects.
Trade can be a powerful engine for poverty reduction, but rigged trade rules mean a bad deal for people in developing countries www.maketradefair.com.
The Scottish Executive wants to make Scotland a Fair Trade Nation. Oxfam is urging public authorities in Scotland to make a real difference by ensuring sustainable, ethical purchasing that upholds the rights of workers' and communities.
