Climate change and poverty
Brown talks green as the percentages go up.....
20 November 2007
Gordon Brown set eyebrows raising when, during his speech yesterday on a low carbon future for Britain, he hinted that a 60 per cent cut in carbon emissions by 2050 may have to go up to 80 per cent. If this is the case then the British Prime Minister is beginning to sing in tune with Oxfam.
We can only urge Mr Brown to think along lines of an 80 per cent cut by rich countries in order to halt the worst impacts of climate change. The world's poorest countries are, as we know already, suffering from the effects of climate change. The UK government is proud of its committment to cutting emissions and if it wants to show true leadership it needs follow up its bold words with bold action.
