Climate change and poverty
Poor hit hardest by climate change
13 December 2007
A welcome story from Associated Press yesterday focuses on how poor people will be hit hardest by climate change. It contrasts the adaptation measures which rich countries, including the Netherlands, Italy, and Singapore, are putting in place, with the lack of money poor countries have to implement protection systems.
The article also covers the need for developed countries to increase financing for adaptation. As Oxfam's recent paper on adaptation revealed, the Netherlands is investing at least $2.9bn in building new flood dykes at home, but has pledged only $19m to the UN's adaptation funds. Dutch shoppers spend this much buying car stereos every two months!
Oxfam's Antonio Hill is quoted, pointing out that the poor countries' urgent needs, such as access to clean water and health care, are being made more difficult by climate change.
