Major carbon emitters meet in Hawaii

30 January 2008

This week, sixteen of the world's biggest carbon emitters meet in Hawaii for the second in President Bush's series of Major Economies Meetings.

The meeting presents an opportunity for the United States and the other rich countries to commit to mandatory emissions cuts, and new funding to help poor countries adapt to the impacts of climate change.

At Oxfam, we are concerned that more than 170 UN members have not been invited to Hawaii, specifically poor countries most at risk of climate change.

Climate Progress blog highlights Greenpeace's stunt last night, marking the opening of the Hawaii meeting, by projecting the message "U.S. Global Warming Plan: Hell and High Water" onto the Washington Monument, just south of the White House.
