Stephen Crabb MP visits Haverfordwest VC Primary School The Global Campaign for Education took place between the 21-25 April 2008 calling for every child in the world to receive a basic education for free. There are only 7 years to go to meet the UN's Millennium Development Goal to achieve universal primary education for all the world's children by 2015 but 72 million children are still missing out on a primary education, with millions more forced to drop out of school before they can complete even a basic education.

As part of the Campaign's week of Action in Wales Stephen Crabb MP visited Haverfordwest VC Primary School where the children there had learnt about the right to an education and added their support to the call for Governments across the world to provide free, compulsory public primary education to all children. Stephen Crabb MP promised to hand over the children's action cards to Send My Friend to School to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Stephen Crabb MP said:

Money spent on primary education really does have an affect - it is money well spent.Education is how people around the world can work their way out of poverty. If children are given the chance to learn how to read and write they will have a brighter future.

Steve Brooks, of Oxfam Cymru, said:

World leaders have pledged that by 2015 every child in the world will receive a free and basic education. We're glad that Stephen Crabb has added his support to this campaign to put pressure on governments and the international community to make sure they fulfil their promise to all the boys and girls in the world.

He added,

Millions of parents, teachers and children around the world are calling on their governments to provide free, good quality, basic education for all the world's children.

Stephen Crabb MP added ''Children should be given their basic human right to education wherever they live.''
