Oxfam Cymru has been touring Wales with its latest campaign to urge world leaders to prioritise action on climate change at July's G8 Summit in Japan. Oxfam Cymru's Wish Upon a Star campaign calls for continued action on overseas aid, global healthcare and tackling climate change. The first day of the summit falls on the Japanese festival Tanabata. On this day, people tie written wishes to bamboo trees, and Oxfam Cymru is asking people across Wales to send a Tanabata wish to world leaders.

During the tour Oxfam Cymru visited the Urdd National Eisteddfod in Conwy where Elfyn Llwyd MP joined young members of the Urdd to send their wishes to the G8.

Elfyn Llwyd MP said: "I am delighted to join the Urdd and Oxfam Cymru in calling on G8 leaders to commit themselves to tackle climate change."

"The young people of the Urdd are sending a clear message from Wales to the world's eight most powerful leaders that they must sign up to a strong global deal to drastically cut carbon emissions. They must also provide funds to support poor countries in adapting to climate change."

"G8 leaders must also meet the promises they made in 2005 to give more aid to poor countries in 2005. It's time they delivered."

In Porthmadog the local Oxfam shop joined the campaign to gather wishes for the G8 summit.

Victoria Chance, Oxfam Porthmadog shop manager:
"We're so glad that the tree has stopped off in Porthmadog so that we can add our support to this really important campaign. Think what it must be like to have no doctor when you're ill, no help when you are at your weakest and most in need. So the message is simple - G8 leaders must also meet the promises they made in 2005 to give more aid to poor countries in 2005. It's time they delivered."

Oxfam Cymru will be collecting wishes across Wales until the G8 summit in Japan in July. We need thousands of people across Wales to join the campaign by sending a wish and demanding Action Now on aid, health and climate change.
