WELSH PUBLIC DONATE OVER £1 MILLION TO DEC HAITI APPEAL

The Welsh public have shown their generosity by donating over £1 million to the DEC Haiti Appeal to help the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the country over a week ago - and the figure is set to increase.

Following a weekend of fundraising around Wales the support continues with many activities lined-up for this coming week.

Today (Monday 25th January at 12.30 pm) at the Senedd, DEC Cymru (Disasters Emergency Committee Cymru) member organisations will be meeting with First Minister Carwyn Jones and other Welsh Assembly Members to urge communities across Wales to unite in their efforts to support the DEC Haiti Appeal.

Jeff Collins, Chair of DEC Cymru, will thank everybody in Wales who has contributed to the DEC Haiti Appeal, and have shown such generosity:

"I'm looking forward to have the opportunity to thank every one person that has dug deep into their pockets and contributed towards this appeal. The remarkable generosity of the Welsh public has continued to make possible the vital work that is being done by our member agencies on the ground in Haiti. More and more water, food, household items and medical supplies are getting through to the earthquake survivors. These generous donations will not only greatly aid our immediate work, but also help us work with survivors to rebuild new lives from the ruins."

Islamic Relief - a member of the DEC - is one of the aid organisations currently on the ground providing aid where it is most needed. Two Islamic Relief aid workers who have just returned from the on-the-ground operations in Haiti will also be present at the event at the Senedd on Monday.

On Wednesday 27th January, in a show of solidarity, 90 South Wales restauranteurs will be supporting the DEC appeal by donating 50% of their proceeds on the night for the victims of the earthquake. The funds raised will contribute to essential emergency supplies required by the people of Haiti, including food, shelter and medical supplies. For information on the restaurants in your area that are uniting for Haiti please call 07824465159 or 07968165138 or visit http://www.islamic-relief.org.uk/Haiti-Earthquake-Appeal.aspx
