Welsh Rugby stars added their support to DEC Cymru's Wales-Wide appeal to raise funds to help the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Launching the DEC Cymru Congo Crisis Appeal, at St David's Hall, DEC Cymru Chair Richard Laydon said that while aid is getting through to those affected, a massive scale-up is required.

More than 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes to escape the fighting in recent weeks, adding to more than one million already displaced as result of the conflict.

Wales captain, Ryan Jones, said, "Even at a time when we as a team are focused on matchday this Saturday, it's important to spare a thought and some change for those who are facing terrible circumstances around the world, especially in the Congo at the moment.

Jones added, "The Welsh public have always shown us tremendous support and we are offering our backing to the DEC Cymru Congo Crisis Appeal to encourage fans to support this worthy cause in the same way."

Agencies that make up the DEC are already delivering life-saving food, water, shelter and emergency medical supplies to those affected, but the scale of the crisis means much more is needed.

Aid workers on the ground are reporting:

- Many people displaced for the second, third or even fourth time by conflict.

- Thousands of children living in spontaneous settlement camps, where they are at increased risk of being physically and mentally abused.

- World Vision estimate there are around 5,500 former child soldiers in the camps, who are vulnerable to being re-recruited by the warring militias.

- Extremely high levels of rape and gender-based violence, with poor security to protect girls and women in the camps. In the town of Kanyabayonga, Oxfam reported a ten fold increase in the number of rapes reported at local hospitals and clinics between May and the beginning of November.

- A significant increase in child malnourishment. Before the latest upsurge in violence, nutrition experts were admitting one or two malnourished children per day at the World Vision nutrition centre in Rwanguba, east of Rutshuru. Since fighting devastated the rebel-held territory near Rutshuru, between eight and ten children have been arriving every day.

Ryan Jones, added, "If people are as generous today as they have been in the past they can make a real difference. Every penny counts."

It's easy to donate. Please visit our website on www.dec.org.uk or call the DEC on 0370 60 60 900 or donate at any high street bank or post office.

The Friends and Neighbours (FAN) Groups have joined in partnership with Oxfam Cymru, after being awarded financial backing from the development, campaigning and humanitarian charity, enabling the FAN Groups to continue their work over the coming year.

Oxfam is well known for its work relieving poverty and fighting injustice abroad, but a lot of people do not realise that they have programmes that work towards helping improve the lives of people living in the UK.

Oxfam Cymru recognised the FAN Groups success in creating a network of groups based in their local communities for people to listen to each other and give emotional support. Newcomers to the area are made particularly welcome and the FAN Groups also create a space for cultural exchange and a platform for all in the community to be heard. The renowned charity Oxfam has noted the impact the FAN Groups have had on community cohesion, reducing social isolation and promoting religious and racial harmony, understanding and respect for all.

Lynne Hughes of Oxfam Cymru said: "All over the world Oxfam works with people affected by crisis. In the UK this means helping those who are fleeing persecution abroad and seeking asylum here.

We work with asylum-seekers to help them overcome the prejudice they may face in the UK. As such we support projects that bring asylum-seekers together with their host communities to break down the stereotypes the groups have of each other, and help the communities to understand each other better. FAN is an excellent example of this."

Gill Secretary/Trustee of FAN was thrilled that Oxfam chose to back the FAN Groups. She said: "Everyone admires the work of Oxfam and it was wonderful to have their support for a project to start putting things in place for the FAN Groups to become a National Organisation which as a result, will be ready to help and advise on setting up FAN Groups across Wales."

Over 70 people turned out for an inspirational evening of Africa in Swansea marking the end of a week of Oxfam Live events across Wales.

The Guildhall, Swansea was the venue of an evening of African food, music and presentations from Oxfam staff with the highlight of the night Abraham Conneh, Oxfam's Education Officer in Liberia bringing to life his work on getting girls back into education as well as reading his poetry.

Prior to this event Abraham traveled the length of Wales visiting Bangor, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, Cardiff and Brecon meeting Oxfam volunteers and supporters.

This was a chance for people to hear directly how their time and money is helping poor people in Liberia but also a chance for Abraham to thank volunteers and supporters and to make them realise that their support, however big or small, is making them agents of change.

"Girls of Substance: Getting girls back into school in Liberia"

We live in a world of inequalities
Not by chance, neither by choice
Society dictates the norms
We make the norms of the most vulnerable
Of the most powerless
Of the most marginalised

But listen
We are girls of substance
We are equal mates
Not subordinates
We are equal brains
Not shadows of beauty
We are agents of change
Not products of chance

We were nowhere
But today we are somewhere
We were nobody
But today we are somebody
We were useless
But now we are useful
We were hopeless

But now we are hopeful
We are girls of great possibility
Be not afraid of girls in search of equality
We have that dynamic ability
Help us improve our dignity
Give us your best
Oxfam will do the rest

By Abraham Conneh

The Albany Road Oxfam shop, in Cardiff, is the first in Wales to launch the 'Gift Aid' scheme in an experimental pilot which extends to 12 shops accross the UK.

The welsh shop had the most successful first week of all participating branches signing up 72 donors- easily!

Sue Courtney-Thomas, shop manager, said that the sign-up process is easy and customers are very keen to be involved. Gift-Aid is a scheme that enables Oxfam to claim back 28 % tax on money generated from donated goods. The tax-rebate scheme amounts to an estimated £20,000 additional income for the shop, and will be rolled-out across all Welsh shops in the new-year.

Picture Jonathan Tench / Oxfam Cymru" src="http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/cymru/goats.jpg" width="184" height="123" align="left" /> The present situation in east Africa is causing food prices to rise which risk pushing millions of people across the region towards severe hunger and destitution. Oxfam Cymru is appealing for money to bolster its emergency work across the area. At a time when food prices are making news headlines almost daily, what we are seeing in East Africa is a part of the world that could be on the brink of the first global food price famine.

Oxfam is working throughout the east of Africa but needs public support to increase its emergency assistance operation, which is so needed desperately.

Students from Howells School Llandaf, have joined Oxfam Cymru's campaign to urge world leaders to prioritise action on climate change, aid and healthcare at this weeks G8 Summit in Japan.

Four sixth form students At Howells School, Llandaf will be in Japan this week attending the J8 - the junior global summit which is taking place at the same time as the G8 Summit . They will take Oxfam Cymru's messages with them when they represent the UK at the meeting.

Oxfam Cymru's Wish Upon a Star campaign calls for continued action on overseas aid, global healthcare and tackling climate change. The first day of the summit falls on the Japanese festival Tanabata. On this day, people tie written wishes to bamboo trees, and Oxfam Cymru are asking people across Wales to send a Tanabata wish to world leaders.

Before they went off to the land of the rising sun the young campaigners gathered support on home turf and got the whole school signed up to the campaign.

Jasper Warner said: "It's great to team up with Oxfam Cymru - the Action Now Campaign is exactly what we are about - making sure that the world leaders deliver exactly what they promised three years ago.. It's time they delivered.''

Hannah Cockley added, ""We want the world the world's eight most powerful leaders to hear a clear message from Wales - that they must sign up to a strong global deal to drastically cut carbon emissions. They must also provide funds to support poor countries in adapting to climate change.

Rose Stuart said, "We are the future and if today's world leaders don't act on their promises now, we'll be the ones picking up the pieces in twenty years time."

Harry Brooks said, "More young people in Wales should think a bit more about what kind of world we'll be living when we're older, and take action to make sure it's the kind of planet we ant it to be."

Steve Brooks, Acting Head of Oxfam Cymru said: "It's fantastic that young people from Cardiff are supporting our Wish Upon a Star campaign - we need action now from the world's richest countries on aid, health and climate change, not promises for a distant future."

Oxfam Cymru has been touring Wales with its latest campaign to urge world leaders to prioritise action on climate change at July's G8 Summit in Japan. Oxfam Cymru's Wish Upon a Star campaign calls for continued action on overseas aid, global healthcare and tackling climate change. The first day of the summit falls on the Japanese festival Tanabata. On this day, people tie written wishes to bamboo trees, and Oxfam Cymru is asking people across Wales to send a Tanabata wish to world leaders.

During the tour Oxfam Cymru visited the Urdd National Eisteddfod in Conwy where Elfyn Llwyd MP joined young members of the Urdd to send their wishes to the G8.

Elfyn Llwyd MP said: "I am delighted to join the Urdd and Oxfam Cymru in calling on G8 leaders to commit themselves to tackle climate change."

"The young people of the Urdd are sending a clear message from Wales to the world's eight most powerful leaders that they must sign up to a strong global deal to drastically cut carbon emissions. They must also provide funds to support poor countries in adapting to climate change."

"G8 leaders must also meet the promises they made in 2005 to give more aid to poor countries in 2005. It's time they delivered."

In Porthmadog the local Oxfam shop joined the campaign to gather wishes for the G8 summit.

Victoria Chance, Oxfam Porthmadog shop manager:
"We're so glad that the tree has stopped off in Porthmadog so that we can add our support to this really important campaign. Think what it must be like to have no doctor when you're ill, no help when you are at your weakest and most in need. So the message is simple - G8 leaders must also meet the promises they made in 2005 to give more aid to poor countries in 2005. It's time they delivered."

Oxfam Cymru will be collecting wishes across Wales until the G8 summit in Japan in July. We need thousands of people across Wales to join the campaign by sending a wish and demanding Action Now on aid, health and climate change.
