Oxfam Cymru believes that no one in Wales should have to live in a cold home. That's why we have joined with key organisations in Wales to form a coalition and have developed a fuel poverty charter to highlight the urgent action we believe is needed to eradicate fuel poverty in Wales.

We call for:

- A detailed action plan setting out how and when fuel poverty will be eradicated in Wales
- Support to all fuel poor households to stay warm- until fuel poverty is eradicated
- A co-ordinated and united approach across the statutory sector (at UK and Wales level) that involves partners from the private, voluntary and community sectors in Wales

We call on the Welsh Assembly Government to endorse the charter and to implement the policy priorities it sets out as a comprehensive package to ensure that every household in Wales can benefit from the comfort of a warm home. The Welsh Assembly Government is shortly to launch a new fuel poverty strategy for Wales and the coalition would like to see the calls we outline in our charter, incorporated into this strategy.

The fuel poverty coalition is led by Consumer Focus Wales and NEA Cymru and supported by a steering group made up of a range of key organisations in Wales working to take forward the fuel poverty agenda. These include: Citizens Advice Cymru, Age Concern Cymru & Help the Aged in Wales, Community Housing Cymru, Children in Wales, West Wales Eco Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support, Shelter Cymru, Disability Wales, Oxfam Cymru, Care & Repair Cymru, End Child Poverty Network Cymru, NEA Cymru and Consumer Focus Wales.

On the weekend of the 16-18th of October Wales/Africa community linking projects came together with Oxfam Cymru to stand up against poverty in Llandrindod Wales. Oxfam Cymru supporters throughout Wales wrote to their MP joining over 170 million people world wide taking action to tackle poverty.

In the year 2000, world leaders made a promise to halve extreme global poverty by 2015, by working towards the Millennium Development Goals. The weekend of the 16th-18th of October coincides with the UN World Day for the Eradication of Poverty when people worldwide reflect on the progress made towards the Millennium Development Goals and call for increased action.

In order to achieve these goals, it is vital that the UK government retains the commitment to 0.7% of national income being spent on aid by 2013. That aid must also be used solely in the fight against poverty and nothing else.

Yet the effectiveness of this commitment will be undermined if climate change is not prevented, as rising temperatures cause droughts, floods and causing disease to spread further among the world's poorest people. It is vital that the UK government commits to a real cut in C02 emissions of at least 40% by 2020 - not a pretend cut in which the UK 'offsets' its emissions. This must be in addition to supporting developing countries towards low carbon development.

The world's poorest people do not have a voice in UK politics, yet their lives and livelihoods often depend on the decisions of our representatives. That is why campaigners took it upon themselves to put pressure on Welsh MPs to ensure that the laws passed in the UK support the success of the Millennium Development Goals, prevent the worst effects of climate change and support the world's poorest communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change that they are already experiencing.

Elliott J. Frieze, Welsh fashion designer, launches Oxfam fashion boutique in Cardiff with host of Welsh celebrities in support

An Oxfam Boutique has arrived in Cardiff! A special launch event took place on Thursday 8th October with talented Welsh designer Elliott J. Frieze at the store on St Mary's St in the Welsh capital.

This is the first Oxfam Boutique to open outside London and these Oxfam shops are targeted at the fashion market and at people who care about both what their clothes look like and the impact of their clothes on people and the environment. They provide shoppers with unique style, beautiful one-off clothes, and the assurance that every item will raise money to fight poverty around the world.

Val Griffiths, Oxfam Area Trading Manager for Wales, said, "These boutiques are all about creating a great shopping experience. Oxfam has always been a place where stylish people hunt for interesting items to create their look, the boutiques are set to make that even easier. Our customers have told us they want a more contemporary shopping experience, and these new shops are set to turn the traditional concept of an Oxfam shop on its head."

Elliott J Frieze, a Cardiff born fashion designer who has modeled for Paul Smith and a collection of his designs have been worn by Yasmin le Bon, Lily Cole and Erin O'Connor at London Fashion Week, attended to launch this exciting venture.

Elliott J Frieze said, "It's very exciting for me to come back home to Cardiff to help launch such a great fashion venture. I've seen the boutiques in London and I think that they're really raising the bar of ethical and sustainable fashion. You've got fantastic and interesting one off designs being created from donated clothes, sold to raise money for Oxfam. It's a win-win for everybody!".

Elliott J. Frieze has also just announced that he will be donating a four pieces from his Premier collection under the Elliott J. Frieze Brand post London Fashion Week in February 2010 that will consist of both menswear and womenswear.

Several glamorous Welsh celebrities such as Cerys Matthews, Amy Wadge, and Sarra Elgan, to name a few have, donated items of clothing in support of its opening.

Sarra Elgan said, "I'm really excited about the opening of the first Oxfam boutique in Cardiff. I love finding designer bargains and these type of second hand boutiques thrive in cities like London and New York - so to have one here on our doorstep where we can shop for unique items and help others in a small way is fantastic - I'm sure my friends and I will be regulars!"

And Lucy Owen, who presents the nightly news programme BBC Wales Today and consumer show X-Ray for BBC Cymru Wales, has donated a Julien Macdonald dress to the new Oxfam Boutique in Cardiff.

Lucy Owen said, "This is a really great idea - boutique shopping for a great cause. It's the kind of place where you could find fabulous, original or one-off pieces. It's really exciting going somewhere like this, where you never know what little gem you could pick-up."

Also during the launch event reworked pieces were unveiled, created by fashion students from the BA (Hons) Fashion Design course at the University of Wales, Newport from an array of Oxfam donated items ranging from evening gowns to duvet covers. They will be on sale at the Oxfam Boutique in Cardiff. This is the first project of the partnership between the Oxfam Boutique in Cardiff and University of Wales, Newport fashion students.

The Boutique will sell clothes, jewellery and accessories that are a mixture of high end donated items, restyled items, Fair Trade and sustainable new fashion.

The alarms were ringing at 12:18 pm on Queen St, Cardiff on Monday 21 September sending out a siren call from the people of Wales that the world needs to act on climate change.

Dozens of campaigners along with Oxfam Cymru campaigners, volunteers and staff gathered at a spot in Wales' capital city to add its voice to The Global Wake Up Call - with a clear message that world leaders need to wake up and act on climate change

Take a look at the video - click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQzM0x9z85A

It is all focused on the most important meeting of all - the UN summit on climate change summit in Copenhagen in December. This is when world leaders will meet to decide our destiny. Synchronised alarms ringing at 12:18 (local time) signified the date December 18th: the last day of the critical negotiation.

The Global Wake Up Call, which started in New York yesterday, will see thousands of people in cities, towns and villages around the world unite to make a massive noise, sending a loud message - one that leaders cannot ignore.

Stop Climate Chaos Cymru - a coalition made up of environment and development charities, unions, faith, community and women's groups - arranged today's Wake Up Call in Cardiff.

Julian Rosser, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Cymru, said, "Right now the world is sleepwalking into a disaster. Unless world leaders wake up pretty soon we will all face a living nightmare. We in Wales have sounded the alarm, we've made a massive noise on Queen St, Cardiff to wake up world leaders to the urgency of climate change."

This September sees a series of high level meetings from G20 to UN in Pittsburgh to Bangkok. Campaigners say that they will pave the way and warm up the political will for Copenhagen and call on governments, especially in developed countries, to wake up to their historic responsibility - as the main polluters and the ones with the resources to deal with it.

The Global Wake Up Call urges leaders to agree to the financing so that the Copenhagen meeting in December can agree a global climate action plan. Climate campaigners gathered in Cardiff today say that money needs to be promised to help the poorest countries to adapt to current threats as well as to develop in a low carbon way. The deal must be FAIR - AMBITIOUS - BINDING

Rosser added, "World leaders can't bury their heads any longer and expect the problem drift away. Climate change is here and it's real. There is still time to build a greener, safer world. But the people of Wales have raised the alarm - it's up to world leaders now. If they snooze, the world will lose."

Arthur and a sturdy band of volunteers hard work paid off over the week with hundreds of people signing the Oxfam petition.

Many politicians also showed their support including: Peter Hain MP, Secretary of State for Wales and member of the UK Cabinet, Carwyn Jones AM, Wales's Counsel General and Leader of the House, Elin Jones AM, Minister for Rural Affairs, and Kirsty Williams AM, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats

Many others promised to do their best against climate change - adding a blue handprint to a frieze around the stand.

Climate change affects everybody, but climate change especially affects poor people first, and it's hitting women hardest.

Extreme weather changes like floods, droughts, storms, rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall are being felt most in developing countries. Poor women rely more on natural resources and have fewer ways to protect themselves.

To tackle climate change on a global scale we all must play our part by changing our own lives and encouraging our friends and families - and the politicians who act in our names - to make a difference too. Oxfam Cymru and partners are working together with women in Wales to raise
their voices, and be the change they want to see in the world.

Today, Oxfam Cymru campaigners gathered on the edge Cardiff Bay in a bid to persuade Gordon Brown to take the plunge on climate change. Campaigners are pushing Brown to attend the critical UN meetings taking place in Copenhagen in December.

The campaign, Here & Now - Yma & Nawr calls on Brown to lead the way in the UN climate talks to make sure everyone gets a fair and safe deal to enable them to fight the human cost of climate change.

Oxfam is already seeing the impact of climate change in the communities its works with in countries around the world. Millions of people are struggling to cope with its consequences. They are losing their homes, livelihoods and lives.

The forecast is worse: a new report from Oxfam predicts that in six years time, the number of people affected by crises related to climate change is set to rise by 54 per cent to 375 million people. This threatens to overwhelm the humanitarian aid system.

Aida Pesquera from Oxfam in Colombia and Acting Head of Oxfam Cymru, who launched the Here & Now campaign in front of the Welsh Assembly, said: "Climate change is about people, and people in Colombia are already suffering and losing their livelihoods because of it. It really is no exaggeration to say that, at this meeting of the UN in December, Gordon Brown and other world leaders have the opportunity to save lives and deliver a better future for everyone, not just the wealthiest countries."

Gregory Akall, is a pastoralist from Turkana district, the north-western region of Kenya, is studying MA International Journalism at Cardiff University. He has seen and felt the impact of climate change on his community and the people there, and is adding his support to Oxfam Cymru's campaign. He said: "Climate change is an issue which is close to my heart as a Turkana pastoralist, my family and my community have been severely affected by the changes in weather patterns pushing them to edge of existence.

"I have seen the human cost of climate change, and it's becoming clearer to the world. Tens of hundreds of Turkana pastoralists have been killed and thousands displaced as a result of inter-tribal conflicts, triggered in part by extreme weather events such as droughts. My community is heavily dependent on food aid after losing all their livestock, to the long-running droughts.

"The nature of climate change is changing. It does not choose rich or poor people, developed or developing countries but it will affect people and countries differently.

"Climate change is no longer a scientific or environmental issue but it is dependent on politics. That is why I am urging the UK, as one of the world's richest countries to take action and change its attitude Here & Now. How often is there a real chance to save the world? Political leaders meeting in Copenhagen this year have the power to choose, whether they attempt to or not. So it's crucial that Gordon Brown ensures that they grasp this opportunity before it's too late."

People can join the campaign and petition Gordon Brown directly by going to www.oxfam.org.uk/hereandnow or texting 'Now' or 'Nawr' to 87099. Standard network rates apply.

Oxfam Live is where you can find out the huge difference your support is making.

The Oxfam family stretches around the world, and supporters like you are right at the heart of it. That's why we'd love you to come along to one of our Oxfam Live events. It's our chance to say thanks - and to let you know what a massive difference you're making.

In Wales, we have organized a jammed packed week of events in May, where Farhana Hafiz, an Oxfam programme worker from Bangladesh, will be talking about her work there. Farhana's work focuses on violence against women and she will also talk about how the people of Bangladesh really are being affected by climate change.

But it doesn't end there, the floor will be open for you to ask about any aspect of Oxfam's work here in Wales or in any on the countries in which we work. And you'll also have the opportunity to meet other Oxfam volunteers and supporters and chat over a Fair Trade cuppa.

Basically, you'll get an exclusive, insider's look at Oxfam's work, and we'll hopefully get to know you a bit better, too.

This year, events will be held in Aberyswyth Brecon, Bangor, Cardiff, Haverfordwest, Porthmadog, and Swansea.

So if you'd like to come, please register on the following link or telephone 0300 200 1269. We look forward to seeing you there!

As the fifth richest country in the world, it's difficult to understand how one in every five people in the UK lives in poverty. But they do. Many people can't afford daily essentials like heating and appropriate clothing. Many children go to school, or to bed, without having eaten enough food.

Wales is a particularly affected area. In the 2003 National Assembly for Wales Annual Report on Social Inclusion in Wales it was described as "a country that suffers in places from pronounced deprivation. Such areas suffer from poor standards in health, low educational attainment, substance misuse, benefit dependency and a dearth of employment prospects."

Household Below Average Income figures from 2006/7 showed that 29 percent of children in Wales were being seriously affected by poverty, and the recent recession and credit crunch are not helping to improve matters. For the first time in a decade unemployment has risen to 100,000, and some companies are resorting to four-day working weeks meaning workers are losing one fifth of their pay.

The Oxfam Cymru UK Poverty group carried out a study on the effects of poverty on people living in the Welsh Capital. Once again the link between poverty, huge debt and mental illnesses like anxiety and depression was highlighted. The report concludes that changes need to be made to various areas of government policy in order for real, sustainable improvement to take place.

This is why Oxfam Cymru supports the Get Fair campaign's constituency based lobby in June this year. Get Fair is a coalition of over 50 children's and older people's organisations, refugee and disabled groups, housing groups, faith and community groups. They are calling for all major political parties to deliver on their existing commitment to end child poverty by 2020, and extend this goal to tackle poverty across all generations in the UK.

The lobby of MPs will take place on 26-27 June. In order for it to be successful the campaign needs people to act as local organisers in bringing together people from different organisations to plan the lobby. A briefing event will be held in Cardiff at the City URC Church from 7 - 9 pm on the 24th April. For more information about the event, resources, to take part as a local organiser or simply register your interest please call 0161 2369321 or email info@getfair.org.uk.

The DEC has today launched the Gaza Crisis Appeal.

Leading Welsh aid agencies are appealing to the public for urgently needed funds to help ease the desperate plight of people affected by the conflict in Gaza.

Over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, and many thousands have been injured, overwhelming local hospitals. The destruction has left people without homes and many children without schooling; power, food and water supplies are insufficient to cover the population's needs. Agencies are already providing food, drugs and blankets as well as delivering clean water.

The DEC said: "We will soon reach the limit of what we can do, without more money. Political solutions are for others to resolve, but what is of major concern to us all is that many innocent people have been affected by the situation - and it is them that we seek to help."

It's easy to donate. Please visit our website on www.dec.org.uk or call the DEC on 0370 60 60 900 or donate at any high street bank or post office.

Ospreys stars, Ian Gough, Huw Bennett and Ashley Beck are calling on people to back Oxfam's Unwrapped range of gifts and buy decent Christmas presents this year - putting an end to receiving unwanted gifts like fluffy dice, woolly jumpers and leopard print umbrellas!

Goats, school books and mosquito nets are just some of the gifts they want to see on Christmas shopping lists. With a huge range of fun and unusual gifts to chose from including "buy a bog" (50 pounds), 5 bags of seeds (10 pounds), 8 school books (6 pounds) or a mosquito net (15 pounds) you are guaranteed to find something for all your friends and family! There are gifts for the ultimate foodie, to the DIYer, animal lover or bookworm. The Christmas 2008 Oxfam Unwrapped range is the biggest yet and is on sale now.

Ian Gough said:

"It's a great alternative to buying yet another pointless Christmas present for someone! You are buying friends and relatives presents that really make a difference to other people's lives. I like the idea of buying a camel or goat for someone!"

Huw Bennett added:

"It also avoids the disappointment of receiving another unwanted Christmas present! In fact there are some fun secret Santa ideas that I will consider for the boys!"

The boys are sure that the Oxfam Unwrapped gifts will be a great talking point in the Ospreys changing rooms too:

Gough added, "How else can you buy a goat or a camel for somebody for Christmas! There's plenty of rubbish out there that we buy for each other for a laugh, but with Unwrapped presents you can have a laugh but still make a massive difference to somebody's life."

Buying one of Oxfam's Unwrapped gifts means you get the chance to give twice - you get a gift for a friend or loved one and at the same time you're giving to charity and helping some of the poorest people in the world.

Head of Oxfam Cymru, Steve Brooks said:

"Oxfam Unwrapped has solved so many gift dilemmas over the years and has made such a difference in supporting Oxfam's work. At a time when people want to make their money go further buying an Unwrapped gift is the perfect solution and this year it couldn't be easier! We hope to raise even more money this Christmas".

The Christmas 2008 Oxfam Unwrapped catalogue is available in all Oxfam Cymru shops or by calling 0300 200 1252. Shoppers can also visit www.oxfamunwrapped.com. Orders must be placed by 21st December to allow time for delivery.

Picture Gavin Dando" src="http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/cymru/rugby.jpg" width="184" height="123" align="left" /> Welsh Rugby stars added their support to DEC Cymru's Wales-Wide appeal to raise funds to help the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Launching the DEC Cymru Congo Crisis Appeal, at St David's Hall, DEC Cymru Chair Richard Laydon said that while aid is getting through to those affected, a massive scale-up is required.

More than 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes to escape the fighting in recent weeks, adding to more than one million already displaced as result of the conflict.

Wales captain, Ryan Jones, said, "Even at a time when we as a team are focused on matchday this Saturday, it's important to spare a thought and some change for those who are facing terrible circumstances around the world, especially in the Congo at the moment.

Jones added, "The Welsh public have always shown us tremendous support and we are offering our backing to the DEC Cymru Congo Crisis Appeal to encourage fans to support this worthy cause in the same way."

Agencies that make up the DEC are already delivering life-saving food, water, shelter and emergency medical supplies to those affected, but the scale of the crisis means much more is needed.

Aid workers on the ground are reporting:

- Many people displaced for the second, third or even fourth time by conflict.

- Thousands of children living in spontaneous settlement camps, where they are at increased risk of being physically and mentally abused.

- World Vision estimate there are around 5,500 former child soldiers in the camps, who are vulnerable to being re-recruited by the warring militias.

- Extremely high levels of rape and gender-based violence, with poor security to protect girls and women in the camps. In the town of Kanyabayonga, Oxfam reported a ten fold increase in the number of rapes reported at local hospitals and clinics between May and the beginning of November.

- A significant increase in child malnourishment. Before the latest upsurge in violence, nutrition experts were admitting one or two malnourished children per day at the World Vision nutrition centre in Rwanguba, east of Rutshuru. Since fighting devastated the rebel-held territory near Rutshuru, between eight and ten children have been arriving every day.

Ryan Jones, added, "If people are as generous today as they have been in the past they can make a real difference. Every penny counts."
