2012 is the United Nations' International Year of Cooperatives and luckily for Oxfam Cymru the Co-operative in Wales has chosen us as one of their two charity partners for the year.

That means that Co-op staff, customers and stores across Wales will be fundraising throughout the year to support one of our cooperative-based projects in Ethiopia, as well as a project run by Dolen Cymru in Lesotho, who is the other charity partner this year.

But as well as raising money to make people's lives better, it's also a good chance to tell lots and lots of people about Oxfam - what we do and what we're good at!

To help spread the word, we're looking for volunteers who'd be happy to visit their local Co-op stores to encourage managers and staff to get fundraising. You don't need fundraising experience, just some enthusiasm for Oxfam and our work and happy to talk to other people about it.

It's up to you how many shops you'd like to visit but as a back up we've organised a few sessions to make sure you've got all the info you need:

Thurs 16th Feb, 6.30-8.00pm Oxfam Cymru Office, 5-7 St Mary Street, Cardiff, CF10 1AT
Wed 22nd Feb, 6.30-8.00pm Greenhouse, 1 Trevelyan Terrace, Bangor LL57 1AX
Thurs 23rd Feb, 6.30-8.00pm Boars Head Hotel, 120 Lammas Street, Carmarthen, SA31 3AE

If you'd like to come along to one of the sessions, please email Lorraine Rees on lrees@oxfam.org.uk by Friday 10th Feb, so we can make sure we have enough tea and biscuits for all!

If you can't attend a session, or would like to find out more before committing then call 07810 152727 or email Lorraine Rees on lrees@oxfam.org.uk

Members of the Oxfam Cymru Youth Board met for the first time in Cardiff in December. The theme for the meeting was "Education For All". We discussed the fact that 67 million children around the world are currently missing out on an education. So there's still a lot of work to do if the world is to achieve the goal of a primary education for every child by 2015. We learned that over half of the children missing out on an education are girls, a third have a disability and half live in areas affected by war and conflict, like Afghanistan.

To bring attention to this issue, we decided to create paper doll chains. Each paper doll represented either ourselves or a girl who is missing out on an education. A speech bubble was attached to each doll. In the bubbles we wrote messages to our MPs urging them to support the Global Campaign for Education and to make sure that the Prime Minister of the UK does everything he can to persuade other world leaders to do the same. We all left the meeting feeling inspired to get involved with the "Send My Friend to School" campaign next year and we hope to get our schools involved too!

This month's talks in Durban saw a deal being struck, but it is not ambitious enough to prevent painful consequences for poor people around the world.

As we reflect on the outcome of the UN climate talks in Durban earlier this month, we believe that negotiators failed to show the ambition necessary to cut carbon emissions by levels that would limit global temperature rises to no more than 2°C, and avoid dangerous climate change.

Stephen Doughty, head of Oxfam Cymru, says, "The Durban Platform can only be described as a major disappointment. Negotiators have sent a clear message to the world's hungry: 'let them eat carbon'.

"Now Wales, along with the rest of the UK and Europe must continue to lead the way towards a sustainable future - even if this deal is delivered. Wales needs leadership from the Welsh Government on this, and the jury is out on how effective it has been so far. Our eyes will be on the Sustainable Development Bill that is due next year and on the Environment Bill - we want to see clear targets set out in both of these."

The climate talks in Durban saw a deal committing all countries - including major polluters the US and China - to negotiate a legally enforceable treaty on cutting emissions by 2015. However, the treaty will not come into force until 2020, after a decade in which voluntary emissions cuts already pledged by countries do not match up to what scientists say is needed to prevent dangerous levels of climate change.

Mr Doughty added, "The failure to seal an ambitious deal will have painful consequences for poor people around the world. A 4°C temperature rise could be one of utter devastation for poor farmers who will face increasing hunger and poverty. Farmers in parts of Africa could face a drop in crop yields of more than 50% within this generation or that of their children. Food prices could more than double within the next two decades, up to half of which could be caused by climate change."

Calling on the Welsh Government to show how the budget will deliver for the most vulnerable people and communities across Wales.

Oxfam Cymru welcomes the agreement between Labour and the Liberal Democrats in this week's budget to target spending towards the most disadvantaged pupils through a Pupil Deprivation Grant. However, the Welsh Government must now ensure that these funds are used to benefit the pupils for whom they are intended - otherwise they risk missing the point of their creation.

"The money must go reach its destination and not get lost on the way", says Stephen Doughty, Head of Oxfam Cymru, "One way to make sure that this happens would be for Leighton Andrews AM and local authorities in Wales to fund projects that provide targeted support to pupils from poor backgrounds at risk of severe underachievement in school. The 'Nurture' programme in Duffryn in Newport is a prime example of this kind of project and which is sadly currently at risk due to cuts in funding - despite its potential for bringing massive long term benefits to the individual children and their families."

The programme - at Duffryn Community Links - supports parents and children who have experienced several different difficulties, and are in need of "nurture" alongside their mainstream education. Often these children have missed out early development stages in life and need the opportunity to revisit them. Visit the Duffryn Community Link website to find out more.

We also welcome the enhanced funding for skills training in Wales and hope this will be used to support the development of skills for a green economy. Commenting, Stephen Doughty says, "It's encouraging to the see the emphasis placed on investing in jobs and skills in the Welsh budget. The crucial test will be whether these help us make the transformation to a green economy that will put Wales on the path to both a prosperous and low carbon future."

Despite these specific aspects within the budget, Oxfam Cymru also had a broader concern around making the budget work for the most vulnerable at this economically precarious time.

Stephen Doughty said, "The next few months will continue to be critical for the Welsh Government to show how its budget will ensure that the most vulnerable people and communities across Wales are adequately protected from the impacts of the current economic circumstances, wider public spending cuts and welfare reforms."

Whoever you need a gift for, Wales's most famous animal is sure to be a surprise this Christmas. You don't think the lucky recipient would have enough space in the garden? Well fear not, at Oxfam we've thought of that already: we'll house your woolly wonder where it's needed most. You can count on it to improve the outlook of a family in another country. Sheep can thrive in a variety of environments, producing milk and lots of droppings which can fertilise crops. The friend, family member or colleague you send the present to will receive a gift card, which can be personalised with your own message; it also explains how the real gift will change people's lives.

In the Gitovu of northern Rwanda, for example, Oxfam has introduced a community livestock exchange scheme. Anastase Habumukiza with his wife Angelina, have been benefiting from the scheme for a while. Anastase explains "I was given one sheep and then it had lambs, now I have 11. The sheep help me cultivate my land. It is more fertile than ever before. I now have money to pay for my health care and look after my family."

"These sheep have changed my life. Now we can eat whatever we want. We can eat the vegetables and seeds we grow or I can use the money I make from selling my crops to buy things at the market."

Maybe sheep aren't your thing? Well, good news - you can find something for everyone from Oxfam Unwrapped, with gifts from £5 to £3,946! There are gifts for DIYers, packages for business people and chocolate for those with a sweet tooth, to mention just a few. Head over to Oxfam Unwrapped right now and get Christmas shopping!

Funky flares, platform shoes and kipper ties were all the rage when the Newport Oxfam shop first opened its doors on 1 December 1971...

The Oxfam shop in Newport celebrates 40 years of trading today, as its tills ring with a staggering total of £2 million raised for our work across the world. Today the clocks are pushed back for a 70s-inspired celebration, with staff and volunteers dressed in 70s clothes.

Gary Farr, the shop's manager says, "Today is a very special day for all of us at the shop and in Newport. To have kept a shop going over four decades is a fantastic achievement - and even more so when we are reliant on the kind donations of the public and the precious time of local volunteers to keep the shop going. We, and the whole of Newport, should be very proud."

He added, "The dedication of our volunteers over the years and the support of the people of Newport has meant that we have been able to raise a phenomenal amount of money for Oxfam's life changing work across the world. The money we've raised has helped the poorest children in the world to go to school, helped families to have health care and built water wells for people to have clean water to drink."

Members of Newport-born group Goldie Lookin Chain have also sent their messages of congratulations to the shop on this momentous occasion.

Adam Hussain said "Congratulations! Raising two million pounds for Oxfam over fourty years is a brilliant achievement! I'm a big supporter of what Oxfam does and I like popping into the shop to pick up the odd piece of leisurewear that you can't find anywhere else. I've heard Snoop Dogg likes Oxfam too. It's been keeping hip hop in threads for years!! Well Safe!!"

Andrew Horton, Oxfam's Director of Trading, also sent his personal message of thanks and recognition: "A huge congratulations and well done to everybody at the Oxfam Shop in Newport, what an amazing achievement! Such an impressive milestone can only be achieved through tireless commitment of volunteers and the community's support. So a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the shop's success. It's even more special knowing that all the hard work and effort has helped Oxfam to improve the lives of people across the world. Here's to another 40 years!"

Campaigners call on Assembly Members to tell world leaders that Wales wants real action on climate change.

Yesterday supporters of Stop Climate Chaos Cymru met John Griffiths, Welsh Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development and other Assembly Members, as part of the African Climate Connection. Joined at the Senedd by African musicians Assembly Members signed leaves to add to a Baobab tree, sending a message for world leaders to cut emissions and to deliver funding so that the poorest countries in the world can adapt and develop in sustainable way. The event is part of a UK-wide campaign which sees hundreds of local people organising events during the UN climate change talks in Durban, South Africa, this week.

Haf Elgar, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Cymru said, "We are sending a strong message from the steps of the Senedd to world leaders in Durban that Wales wants to see real action being taken to tackle climate change. Wales has a proud history of international solidarity and supporting developing countries, and led the way in setting annual emission reduction targets."

Elgar added, "World leaders need to hear that the world is calling for a robust deal to help the poorest countries adapt to the effects of climate change that are already happening. With floods and droughts already destroying communities across the world, and environmental damage endangering our planet, any further delay could mean catastrophe for us all."

Earlier this month Mark Williams MP visited Llanon for a coffee morning. Aberystwyth University Oxfam Society's Cliodhna Skerrett took the opportunity to speak to him about their campaigning.

"Mr. Williams has in the past been particularly supportive of Oxfam's work," says Cliodhna, "he supported the Society with our maternal health campaign this spring. He is also very keen to get behind us with our education projects, partly because of his background as a primary school teacher. "

It's important for both Cliodhna and Mr. Williams that their conversations form part of a long-term working relationship. "He is very enthusiastic about continuing to support us," Cliodhna added, "he asked us to remain in contact with him, keeping him informed of our latest projects."

Other members of the Society have been speaking to Kirsty Williams AM, and Cliodhna was excited to tell me that Ms. Williams has joined the Society's Facebook Group.

"I've followed up the conversation with Mark by email," says Cliodhna, "I've sent him more information about the GROW campaign. I'm also looking forward to Kirsty speaking with us on Facebook."

"It's great to have such enthusiastic and passionate activists in Aberystwyth getting out and talking about Oxfam's campaigns with politicians," says Oxfam Cymru Activism Coordinator Louise Weinzweig, "I'm looking forward to hearing Mr. Williams' response to Cliodhna about the GROW campaign."

Oxfam Cymru brings people together to discuss the steps forward for women

Today, millions of women around the world have been forced to flee their homes. A tiny proportion of those make their way to the UK and an even smaller number are dispersed to Wales from their home countries where individuals' abilities to live their lives in peace is threatened. As part of the Women Seeking Sanctuary in Wales project, Oxfam Cymru works with community organisations and with sanctuary seekers themselves to provide the support that enables them to rebuild their lives, developing confidence and skills.

As the finale to its Women Seeking Sanctuary in Wales three year programme, Oxfam Cymru held a seminar to discuss ways of working effectively with sanctuary seeking women and unveiled its Best Practice Guide to help organisations provide the best possible support for women.

Project Coordinator Vicky Goodban said "The seminar was a great way to bring together people from across Swansea, Cardiff and Newport who play central roles in helping female sanctuary
seekers to rebuild their lives. From voluntary organisations, to women with first hand experience of seeking sanctuary in Wales, those attending brought enthusiasm and warmth to the event, as well as shared experiences and aspirations for the future.

"It is really important to open up creative discussion about the reality of sanctuary in Wales and the steps which can be taken to improve the lives of women seeking sanctuary."

Ayo Thompson, manager of the African Community Centre in Swansea, spoke of the positive impact of their weekly refugee women's group. Emily Robertson brought experience of creating and running Swansea City of Sanctuary, and Selina Moyo of the Wales Strategic Migration Partnership enthused guests at the prospect of Cardiff becoming a City of Sanctuary by calling on grassroots organisations and community members to make City of Sanctuary in Cardiff a reality.

Oxfam Change Activist Vicky Leech writes about her action-packed week campaigning in Cardiff last month.

What a week it was! Since returning to Cardiff from the fabulously inspiring Oxfam Change training, I've been able to get my teeth stuck into the GROW campaign. Fuelled by cupcakes, comedy and pop-up tents the Oxfam Cardiff Group took to the streets to raise awareness of land grabs.

It started off with donning green hard hats and braving the rain on Thursday to 'grab' the land around a statue on Queens Street, raising some eyebrows and smiles from lunchtime shoppers. Later on that evening five comedians and a lot of cupcakes took over the Oxfam Boutique. After the comedy we were able to chat about the GROW campaign whilst enjoying a cupcake or two.

Saturday morning I woke up crossing my fingers that the weather would be on our side as it was the Land Grab Reclaim Game. Fortunately the rain held off while teams ran around Cardiff with tents and land grab tape. The four teams had to 'grab' different points around Cardiff. With their tent, placard and land grab tape they had to stay-put for five minutes in the hope they wouldn't be evicted by the 'company boss' (one of our volunteers). The event really got the attention of the public, giving me the chance to speak to lots of different people about land grabs and what is happening in Uganda at the moment.

The week was an enjoyable way of campaigning for serious change across the world. I've gained experience of organising events, improved my confidence in speaking to the public, enjoyed some baking and have really appreciated the support of my friends and the Oxfam Cardiff Group. Oh yes, after the game on Saturday we headed to Oxfam Live in Swansea. In the words of a friend 'you've been Oxfam-ed'. What's next?!

As world leaders meet around a table in Cannes today for the G20 summit, people from across Wales have been backing The Robin Hood Tax as a solution for the world's broken economy.

The G20 is a 48 hour meeting of world leaders and one of the key themes this time will be the eurozone debt crisis where leaders will be discussing the state of the economic system. The G20 was created as a response to the global economic crisis of the late 90's, yet over 10 years and two crises later, we still have a broken economy.

With thousands of protestors gathered in St Paul's Cathedral in London and on Wall Street across the Atlantic, it is clear that there is growing anger towards the current state of the global economy.

One of the solutions at the table of the G20 table is the Robin Hood Tax. This Financial Transitional Tax is a tiny tax on banks which will have a big impact on the world: raising billions of pounds towards tackling the issues of poverty and climate change both in the UK and across the globe.

The proposed tax has already hit the headlines with the likes of Bill Gates, Bill Nighy and most recently, Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury voicing their support.

Add to this over a thousand of the world's leading economists who have already backed the Robin Hood Tax and the public support that has been rapidly swelling over the last few months. This mounting support shows that there is a huge hunger for change and now all eyes are on the G20 leaders to make this happen.

People from across Wales have been out and about to ensure that the Robin Hood Tax is heard by all. The Cardiff Oxfam Group met to discuss the Robin Hood Tax and its benefits whilst the Aberystwyth Oxfam Group had a stall in the town centre to tell the people of Aberystwyth all about the Robin Hood Tax.

It's not too late to show your support! You can find out more at robinhoodtax.org.

And then join over 20,000 people in emailing David Cameron to ask him to take action.

The group's first event this week is a free comedy night on Thursday evening, at the Oxfam Boutique on St. Mary Street in Cardiff. The show, starring comedians Stephen O'Neill, Geraint Dafydd Evans, Charlie Webster and Ted Shiress, will start at 6:45pm, but why not come along earlier for a chat beforehand? There will be cupcakes and much fun to be had! At the end of the evening you can find out how you can get involved in the GROW campaign in Cardiff.

On Saturday Oxfam volunteers will take to the streets of Cardiff to make fun of the companies implicated in land grabs, which are forcing poor farmers from their homes and leaving families hungry. They are looking for teams of 2 - 4 people to play the Oxfam Cardiff Land Grab Reclaim Game! The game will be around the Castle Quarter/St. Mary Street/Queen Street area from 11am until 1pm. You will be helping to raise awareness of land grabbing, as part of Oxfam's GROW campaign, making sure everyone in town has heard about the scandal of land grabs.

Oxfam Cardiff Group's Campaigns Officer, Steve Smith, says, 'Land grabs in Uganda and elsewhere are devestating, leaving poor farmers and their families hungry. The Land Grab Reclaim Game help you to draw attention to this issue in a way that's really engaging for shoppers in Cardiff.'

Oxfam Cymru's Louise Weinzweig met her MP to seek his support for the Robin Hood Tax. Here she recounts her experience, hoping to inspire you to do the same.

'There are three rules for meeting with your MP', I was told, 'Be clear on what you're asking for, go in a group and make sure you're prepared.'

Keen to speak to my MP about the Robin Hood Tax (Financial Transactions Tax) that we urgently need the UK government to stop opposing, I ditched rule two altogether (too much to organise in the time I had) and I have to confess, decided to go ahead with surfing rather than spend more time preparing to meet Jonathan Evans MP for Cardiff North. I hope that by sharing my experience, others will also meet their MP before the end of October; especially if theirs is Jonathan Evans - he really needs convincing.

He expressed predictable concern about the recent EC proposal because it favours siphoning the money raised into the EU budget. This is not something the Robin Hood Tax campaign supports; I think he was surprised when I made it clear I only wanted support for the EC proposal if this element was amended. Another of his concerns was that the cost of this tax would be passed by financial institutions onto small-scale savers, investors and pension holders. However, the International Monetary Fund has carried out research that concludes this tax would be largely progressive, falling on the more well-off in society.

I addressed Mr Evans' concerns briefly and said I would be in touch again by email to address them more fully. Although he was not convinced by the end of our meeting, I was very glad I let him know that I wanted him to support this tax. I will definitely be following up our meeting with more arguments in favour and am all ready now to phone the treasury and hassle them too. I'll just make sure I skip the surfing next time...

There have been serious developments since we launched our land grabs report into evictions, some violent, in Uganda, where at least 22,500 people lost their homes and land and many have been left destitute.

In the past week, members of the evicted community have reported feeling intimidated and harassed after questioning by workers from the New Forests Company (NFC).

We urgently need your support to get justice for these vulnerable communities in Uganda. Send an email to the Chairman of the NFC, Robert Devereux, demanding he take immediate action.
What we're calling for:
- We need NFC to cease this alleged ad hoc questioning of evicted people, immediately.
- We need NFC to commit to a truly independent investigation of the allegations in our report, so that we can get justice for the evicted communities.
