Sleeping Policeman to power street and traffic lights

18 February 2009

Speed bumps are notorious for being the the bane of motorists lives. However, a new pilot scheme in East London is hoping to change that. These green speed bumps will generate kinetic electricity as cars drive over them. Peter Hughes, the designer behind the idea says 'with a steady flow of traffic, four of the ramps used as speed bumps would be enough to power all the street lights, traffic lights and road signs for a mile long stretch of the street."

If you have to buy them (and I do), at least never throw away your empty icecream cartons. The production of plastic is one of the biggest Eco disasters for the earth (and sea), so why pay for a fancy plastic box to stick away somewhere unseen, when they come for free?
AND they are great for
* freezing (soups, left overs for re-using later, next day's dinner),
* using as lunch boxes,
* storing all those bits that you'll want sometime in the future (buttons, curtain hooks, open bags of rice/lentil, pegs, cottons, crayons, etc.)
The only layout needed is a sheet of stick-on labels (cut to cheapskate sizes) and a pencil to write with.
