Use your PC to save the world

7 February 2009

This is ace. You can harness the spare capacity of your home PC to benefit humankind: all you need to do is join IBM's World Community Grid. How it works: while you're using your PC to do really important stuff like updating your Facebook status, the IBM thing runs in the background and uses your machine to do super-clever calculations for Harvard University academics.

As The Guardian says: "it would take Harvard's department of chemistry and molecular biology computers some 22 years to do the necessary calculations for the Clean Energy Project, but using our spare computer capacity, researchers hope this can be reduced to a matter of two years".
