"This was taken in the Oxfam shop in Eastbourne for a feature in the new Inside Oxfam magazine. I hoped to reflect some of the energy and vibrancy which came from the volunteers at the shop. Oxfam shops, with their neon strip lighting, are not the easiest environment to photograph in. Linda the shop's manager and Marc, a volunteer, were sorting clothes in the backroom, a not very promising place for a background. Marc, like many other Oxfam volunteers had joined up after seeing the devastation the Tsunami had wrought in Asia.
Using rear synched flash combined with pulled zoom the background was disguised allowing the people to become the focus - one of the advantages of working with digital is being able to immediately view the results, especially when trying techniques like these. I hoped the photograph captured some of the shop's sense of fun and enthusiasm."
