Get together to make a noise

If you’re anywhere near Huddersfield on Wednesday morning, be sure to swing by the train station and remember to unplug your ipod.

Women musicians from a number of different brass bands across the North of England will be holding a concert to celebrate the launch of Oxfam’s ‘Get Together’ Campaign.

The 30 minutes show, which is taking place in St. George’s Square in Huddersfield on 18th January at 11:00am, aims to encourage brass band musicians across the UK to get together and raise funds for Oxfam’s work with women around the world.

Tabby Clegg, well known brass musician and director of arts company Mode For Publishing, said: “Music is a very powerful way of communicating and changing the world. When I heard of the campaign, I thought that women who play brass bands instruments would love to support it”.

Anyone can organise their own mini fundraising event at home, at work, with friends and in their community. The funds raised will go to support mothers in poor countries who are trying to get themselves out of poverty by setting up a cooperative, or their own business.  Funds will also go towards girl’s education and maternal healthcare.

Tabby, who is calling for all brass musicians and bands in the UK to join the campaign, added: “Music brings people together in a magical way.

There are so many women around the world trying to support their families in the face of awful poverty, and it’s great to know that we can do something to make their lives a bit easier. We are appealing to every single brass band in the country to raise money for Oxfam Get Together- they can give a little every time they gather to rehearse or they can even organise a mini concert if the prefer.

The Get Together campaign is a brilliant excuse to meet up, make music together and it’s a great feeling to know that our music will be benefitting other women around the world”.

Get together to make a difference

Every minute a woman with no medical care dies in pregnancy or childbirth, but £46 raised through a Get Together coffee morning could enable Oxfam to train a midwife in Ghana, saving the lives of babies and their mothers.

A Get Together event can be anything from a brass band concert to a bring-a-dish dinner party, to a cake sale, to a night out, or Zumbathon, and thousands of events will be held on or around International Women’s day (8th March), up and down the country.

Heather Walkington, Fundraising Manager for the North of England, said: “It is amazing to see what a group of women can achieve when they get together. From a donation during a rehearsal, to a brass band mini concert- you can shape your Get Together event in any way you want and help other women around the world”.
