Oxfam-funded local organisations in West Sumatra are on aid missions in the earthquake-hit area ready to distribute 2,400 sheets of tarpaulins for emergency shelter, hygiene kits and clothing said the international agency today.
The agency has immediately released £200,000 to cover the costs of the initial part of the aid effort. Oxfam already had stocks of emergency aid in the area for this type of disaster.
“We had aid ready because this area of Indonesia is susceptible to this type of tragedy. Communications with the quake-zone are difficult and we are hoping for the best but having to plan for the worst. We are pulling together a significant aid effort,” said Jane Cocking, Oxfam’s Humanitarian Director.

Hi,
I was wondering if your require people to help out in Indonesia, and how one would go about that.
Indonesia and its people have a special place in my heart; my grandparents used to live there and I travelled throghout Indonesia in 2007. Of course I will donate what I can, but I was wondering if civilians could actively participate?
Thank you.

Is there a way I can donate specifically to the Sumatra disaster? The Padang region is an area I know well, whereas I feel that Samoa will get a lot of assistance from New Zealand and Australia.
Thanks
October 1st, 2009 at 12:02 pmHi Henry and others,
October 1st, 2009 at 12:29 pmThanks so much for getting in touch.
You can donate here - https://www.oxfam.org.uk/donate/asia-pacific-disasters/index.php
And it would be great if you could share the link/our info with your friends too.
Another option is to hold some kind of fundraising event in support of our emergencies work in general and feed in here - http://www.oxfam.org.uk/oxfam_in_action/emergencies/oxfam365/
In this week of emergencies, we need all the help we can get!
Let us know how you get along and thanks so much for your support.
Best,
Luisa
Hi,
I’ve been trying to contact Oxfam office in Jakarta regarding the Sumatra earthquake. The company I work for, a UK-based company, would like to donate through Oxfam and we’d also like to find out if Oxfam has any longer term plan in the area (reconstruction efforts, etc.). May I have the number of the contact person in Oxfam Indonesia office who is responsible for the disaster relief efforts in Sumatra? Thanks.
October 2nd, 2009 at 9:04 amHi Prelia,
Many thanks for your kind message. We will pass your details on to the office in Jakarta and they will endeavour to get in touch.
Best,
Sarah
