Oxfam campaigner, Bethan Harper, talks about why she’s excited about The Wave.

As someone who spends my days (and nights generally) campaigning on climate change, I know that it’s a very real human issue. The most significant perpetrators and the most significant victims could not be further apart. It is those least responsible for climate change that are feeling the greatest impact.

I’ve never felt so strongly that it’s time to act. We’ve pushed the UK government for strong commitments on climate change. This December it is time to tie in the world’s governments to a fair and safe deal when they meet for the UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen.

The Wave’, in London, on December 5th is our last chance to push them to do this deal. I’m excited to be part of what will be the largest ever climate change demonstration. From close family and friends, the Oxfam groups I work with, all our activists, the people who sign our petitions and randoms in the pub - I’m encouraging everyone to come along.

So many people have taken individual actions in their own lives, from campaigning, their choices about how they travel to what they buy etc. This is a chance to be part of something big, and realise just how many other people around the world care.

I’ve been thinking quite a lot about how we can get a blue dragon made in community workshops in Wales to London….this thing has 4 foot wide head! We’ve not come up with a solution yet, but I’m sure we will. If any of you have any ideas, or if anyone has a van in the Cardiff area - offers greatly received.

I still need to work out my wardrobe (it’s a blue theme), but it will definitely be warm so that I don’t turn blue myself. I’m looking forward to marching along with thousands of people in London and hundreds of thousands around the world. I just need to work out how to get the blue dragon there.

Sign up to ‘The Wave’ demonstration in London on 5th December.
