Do United Nations climate change negotiators get lonely?

What is a UN inter sessional meeting and who takes part? No one really seems to know. But right now, in Barcelona, some vital meetings are taking in place. It’s the final phase of talks before December’s crucial full UN Climate Change Meeting in Copenhagen.

It’s as if they’re taking place in the shadows, outside of the full glare of the public. Which is quite scary when you think that they’re talking about our future and the future of the planet.

We thought the negotiators, representing countries all around the world, might be getting a bit lonely. Negotiating through the night, making big decisions and yet not being known outside of their own families and friends. So we’ve sent a bunch of people along (we’re calling them trackers) to keep an eye on what is, and isn’t, being decided.

Some are getting to know their negotiator quite well. They’re also telling the world about what they’re seeing, in a simple and straightforward way (ie. in a completely opposite way to a UN document).

So, if African countries walk out on negotiations, our trackers can speak to the representatives from their country, and let the rest of us know why. That’s what happened a couple of days ago as Western countries are refusing to meet African expectations on cutting emissions and paying to help them adapt to the changing climate. Have a look at what one of our trackers, Ole Seidenburg, had to say about it.

Even if you want to know why love is definitely not in the air in these meetings then our tracker Leela Raina, from India, has an answer (a very funny one at that).

And what can we learn from the Australian ambassador about her governments position on the safe level of carbon in the atmosphere? Let’s see what our tracker found out when they went on a date.
