Liverpool and Manchester students thumbing up in the fight against climate change

November 6th, 2009 at 5:43 pm.

Hi there. I’m Megan, co-chair of the Manchester University Oxfam society. There is a lot of us about - Check us out (Manchester University Oxfam society)  and at the moment we are all really busy with a fantastic campaigning project which is slowly, but happily, taking over our lives!

Back in sunny June we met with members from the Liverpool University Oxfam society to chat about climate change, the UN Climate Change talks in Copenhagen and how, together, we could make a difference.

We all already knew that climate change is already happening and hitting the poorest people first.  We wanted to do something about it, something MASSIVE  that could both raise awareness about the UN Climate Summit and at the same time raising tonnes of money for Oxfam’s climate adaptation projects in Bangladesh and Nepal.  We also wanted to have fun while doing it and give other students the chance to stand up and express themselves on climate change.

After a lot of chatting, thinking, scratching our heads and many, many cups of tea, someone had the mighty good idea of a… hitch-hike race to Copenhagen! You can watch here how the idea came about:

At 9am on Wednesday 9th December 2009, 30 people from Manchester and 30 from Liverpool will begin a mighty hitch-hike to Copenhagen.  The challenge is to get there by spending as little money as possible!  For this we will have to rely on people’s good will, which gives us loads of opportunities to meet a whole load of great new people and tell them about the importance of taking action on climate change now!

So just last week I did Manchester RAGs Jailbreak - a challenge to travel around the world in 30 hours without spending any money. It was a bit of a taster of what the real hitch hike to Copenhagen could be  like. I left Manchester during a wet (no surprise there!) Friday night just before Halloween for the unknown big wide world and hitchhiked by road almost all the way to…Brussels!  It was insane fun and now I can’t wait for the real thing: COPENHAGEN CLIMATE CHARGE!

The Climate Charge has adopted the North-West MEP Chris Davies as our official negotiator at the climate summit as he has so many great connections in the EU and realises the importance of acting now. Become a fan of his on facebook and tell him your views on climate change!

Last but not least- support us to support climate adaptation in Nepal and Bangladesh!

Look out for our blue t-shirts in December - Please give us a lift if you can!
