Camel for Eastwood Mearns Taxis!
18 November 2008
Local company Eastwood Mearns Taxis have made the rather unusual addition to their fleet...a pair of camels with the help of Oxfam Unwrapped.
Unlike a luxury Mercedes or a fancy limousine, they won't make the smoothest journey home, but they do have a number of advantages: they can go for days without needing any petrol, can carry a load up to 990lbs and provide milk, fuel and fertiliser for a whole family all in one perfect package.
Eastwood Mearns Taxis bought the camel from the Oxfam shop in Newton Mearns and to thank them for this enterprise, the shop has decided to put their name up in lights. Displayed in the shop window will read the headline "Eastwood Mearns Taxis to invest in camels", and you could soon see your name up there too. All customers who make buy from Oxfam Unwrapped will have the chance to see their name in the shop window acknowledging their purchase.
Liz Forbes, from the Oxfam shop in Newton Mearns, said: " We would like to thank Eastwood Mearns Taxis for their support. Not only did they decide to use their donation to buy the camels, but also to buy two goats, to build a bog, train a teacher, build a rainwater collection facility and even provide a family with shelter in an emergency.
" These gifts will make an amazing difference to the lives of the people they go to and if anyone is wondering what to get their friends and families for Christmas, I think something from Oxfam Unwrapped would be perfect. There is something for everyone, whether they be foodies, gardeners, bookworms or DIYers, and as well as being a gift for someone you love, they will also be a gift for someone in need somewhere in the world, who would never normally receive a present at Christmas. "
Lesley Graham, from Eastwood Mearns Taxis, commented: " We were thrilled to be able to buy these gifts from Oxfam Unwrapped, we liked the idea of camels as well as the other things that we bought. The catalogue is a great idea, as you often don't know what you can do to help people in other parts of the world. It's nice to be able to see what your money can buy and how it will help, and there are all sorts of things I would never have thought of before so if you are stuck for gift ideas, the catalogue is definitely well worth a look.
