Pearly King & Queens
2 April 2009
Oxfam's Corstorphine shop is 30 years old this month and to celebrate its Pearl Anniversary, the shop's very own 'Pearly' King and Queens are being honoured for their commitment.
Five of the volunteers (Chris Cathie, Barbara Livingston, Audrey Winton, Margaret Speirs and Esther Sharpley) have been working in the shop since it opened its doors in 1979, and in recognition of their hard work and dedication, have been awarded Oxfam's prestigious 30 year length of service certificates.
They have been there day in day out come hail, rain, sleet or shine for the past 30 years and their dedication, as well as that of the other volunteers, has been invaluable, as they have helped raise vital funds for Oxfam's work around the world.
Speaking about her 30 years with Oxfam, Chris Cathie, said:
" I've been a volunteer at the Oxfam shop in Corstorphine for the past 30 years, and I enjoy every minute of it. The people I volunteer with have become great friends over the years, and it's lovely being able to spend the day in good company doing something worthwhile.
" The five of us who have been with the shop since the very beginning are really touched to be getting some recognition for what we do, but we would still do it even if we weren't.
" It's a really rewarding experience, as well as being fun, because you are always aware, even if it's just in the back of your mind, that the work you are doing is helping people living in poverty around the world.
" I wouldn't change the last 30 years for anything, and I hope to continue here as a volunteer for a good many more! "
Jo Christison, Area Manager for the east of Scotland Oxfam shops, commented:
" We have a lot to thank our volunteers for, not just the long timers, but every member of the team as well. They selflessly give up their free time week after week, and we wouldn't be able to do what we do without them.
" The money Oxfam makes from its shops all goes towards the projects it has in over 70 countries around the world, so the work of the volunteers is essential to keeping Oxfam going!
" It is wonderful that the members of the team in Corstorphine are so dedicated, and we are truly grateful for all their hard work. "
