Reggae legends UB40 make a splash in support of The Wave
23 November 2009
Reggae stars UB40 are today urging the people of Scotland to get behind The Wave - Scotland's biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change.
The band, famous for hits such as Red Red Wine and Kingston Town, is in Glasgow ahead of tonight's gig at the SECC. And guitarist Robin Campbell is thrilled that Glasgow is hosting such a huge public demonstration ahead of next month's UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen.
The Birmingham group even recorded an exclusive jingle for Glasgow's Sunny Govan FM (103.5) in support of The Wave, using their hit The Earth Dies Screaming as the soundtrack. UB40 are also set to visit the radio station today to reiterate their backing for the demonstration.
Robin Campbell said:
"We are very passionate about combating climate change. It's fantastic that Glasgow will host The Wave where thousands of people are expected to take to the streets to make their voices heard.
"It's vital that the world leaders agree a deal on climate change that is fair to the poorest countries on earth. Poor nations are hardest hit by the effects of climate change, yet they are the least responsible for causing it.
"I would urge everyone in Scotland who cares about climate change to attend The Wave on December 5."
Malcolm Fleming, Oxfam Scotland's campaigns manager, said:
"Oxfam wants people in Scotland to attend The Wave on December 5 and send a clear message to Gordon Brown and other world leaders meeting in Copenhagen that we must act now on climate change.
"The talks in Copenhagen are the best chance we have to get the world's greenhouse gas emissions under control and prevent dangerous climate change. As Scotland has the strongest climate legislation in the world, The Wave will send a strong message from Scots that we want other countries to share our ambition."
Heather McMillan, Sunny Govan project manager, said:
"Sunny Govan is all about community involvement and we hope for a huge turnout at The Wave. We're delighted that UB40 have been so supportive of The Wave and are helping to spread the message and make people aware of the seriousness of climate change."
