Musician bands with Scottish agencies to call on Scots to donate to Haiti at www.dec.org.uk or 0370 60 60 900.
15 January 2010
Scottish aid agencies and Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian came together today (Friday) to call on Scots to donate to help those affected by the huge earthquake that has devastated the capital of Haiti.
Although there is as yet no accurate assessment of the death toll, it is clear that millions of people live in the affected area. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, greatly increasing the risk that people will suffer or die in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Despite the challenges, many DEC member agencies are already helping on the ground while others are preparing to do so. Very substantial humanitarian assistance will be required to ensure survivors get food, clean water, emergency shelter, medical care and other support.
Radio and television appeals will also be broadcast throughout Friday, fronted by pop singer Rachel Stevens and Scots broadcaster Kirsty Young.
Stuart Murdoch said:
"The plight of this very poor country puts our own troubles in relief, and we are glad in Scotland to offer what assistance we can. The DEC agencies are already there, providing vital items such as food, clean water, medical care and emergency shelter. But due to the scale of the disaster, they need more funds. Please pledge whatever you can. Call 0370 60 60 900 or visit www.dec.org.uk to make a donation. Let Scotland play its part in the global response."
Gerry McLaughlin, Chair of the DEC in Scotland said:
"This huge quake has ripped apart the lives of millions of people in one of the poorest nations of the world. The disaster poses huge difficulties for aid workers trying to alleviate the terrible suffering. It is clear after the immediate rescue attempt is completed, we will be left with a long-term humanitarian emergency.
"DEC member agencies are responding and face horrendous conditions on the ground. We trust that the Scottish public will respond with their usual generosity to enable us to do this work"
