Is there clearing house to match odd and homeless up team members who have pulled out at the last minute? Raised nearly 3000, ready to rock and roll, support ready, but may now be unexpectedly short of two team members....

Ken says: The Trailwalker Facebook group
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5315264386
is where team mwmbers lookingto match up should go.

What percentage of people or teams complete the course each year?

Ken says: It varies each year depending on weather conditions but around 80% of people finish each year. The biggest problem is blisters so keep your feet happy !

Henry | July 13, 2010 2:14 PM

What happens if it takes us longer than 30 hours?

Ken says: There will be some leeway but we will advise teams well in advance at earlier checkpoints if they are in danger of running out of time to complete the course. Eventually we will need to close the event and teams will have to wirhdraw at the nearest checkpoint as we won't have safety cover any more.

I am a support crew member - I note that hot drinks will be available to the walkers at checkpoints, but will there be hot water for me to make coffee? My thermos flask isn't big enough to last the day for four people!

Ken says: That's fine , we'll have ehough hot water for everyone.

Hi, What time is registration open til on the friday evening before the trailwalker? I think we have a 6am start time so this will mean that we must register fri eve, correct?

Ken says: Yes teams with 6am or 7am start must register Friday evening , and it's recommended for everyone else. Registration will be open from 4pm to 10pm Friday evening.

Helen | July 7, 2010 11:29 AM

The training guide and route guide say that you need to book space at QE country park as it's limited on the Friday night - I have since had an email saying I don't need to. Can you confirm which is correct as we will definitely need space to camp on the Friday.

Thanks.

Jo
Ken says: Since the training guide was written we have negotiated more space at QE park so there is enough room for everyone who would like to come along.
So no booking required.

Two quick questions:
1) Is the route the same as previous years?
2) Is there an established noticeboard or other forum to match up singletons with existing teams where a member has been forced to pull out? The people I was hoping to do this with now think 100kms is too far for them.

Ken says: The route is slightly different to previous years. You can download the latest maps and direction booklet from here http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/fundraise/trailwalker/resources.html

You can also link to the Trailwalker facebook group from there and post messages looking for a team to join.

Is there a rcommended route for support crews to follow between check points?

Ken says: Yes -the recommended route for support crews in in the Support Crew Guide which you can download from here http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/fundraise/trailwalker/resources.html

Hi! We've collected a fair bit of cash off-line - I've entered it as off-line fundraising on our virgin website, but would like to know how to actually pay the cash in please - thanks!

Ken says: Please pay the cash into your own account and write a cheque to cover it. Then send the cheque to Trailwalker support team, Oxfam House , John Smith Drive, Cowley, Oxford OX4 2JY. Please include any sponsor forms, and a note with your name and address and team name so we put it to the right team.

Can I bring my dog?

Ken says: . Trailwalker takes place on rights of way paths, so you're very welcome to take your dog on sections of the trail. If your dog hasn't trained for a 100km event, we don't recommend that it walks the complete course! If you need it you can see more advice here.

jon austin | June 14, 2010 10:38 AM

my partner and i would love to do it in principle - we are reasonably fit and have done some long-distance walking - but are worried about the amount of training we'd realistically be able to manage. we have a small child who is definitely not up for 20 mile walks at the weekend, and we can't easily offload her.

what's the recommended training plan, and what's the minimum people could get away with? (i know this last question is hard to answer). do people do it without training at all?

Ken says: You can see see recommended training plans in the Training and Event guide in the team section of the website here
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/fundraise/trailwalker/index.html
If committing to training is not possible perhaps you would like to volunteer at the event instead. I hope you can get involved in some way

When will an accurate route map be available? There are some oddities in the route as shown here where it departs from the published South Downs Way.

Ken says:. We hope to have the route finalised very soon. We will send a detailed map to all participants and put it up on the website. Please get in touch if you have a specific query about any part of the route and we will try and help

I am a little confused. So trailwalker is an event for a group comprising of 4 members, right? I get that but what I do not understand is the support crew part. Does that mean that 2 people will do the trailwalker and the other 2 will be just support crew??
Ken Says 4 people are in a team and all 4 walk the 100kms. However to enable them to do that they need a support crew as well ,which we recommend to be least two more people.

hi | March 5, 2010 2:37 PM

Is the sign up fee of ?200 per team or per person?

Ken says: Hi B , It is £200 per team. Hope you can join us !

b | February 15, 2010 2:01 PM

How long did the fastest team take last year and who were they?

Ken says: The fastest team overall last year were QGE Team Assaye (a Gurkha Team not surprisingly) and they finished in an incredible 10hrs 45m.

Si⮠Roberts | February 1, 2010 1:29 PM

How many all women teams completed Trailwalker last year and how long did the fastest team take? Also, what is the course record for all women teams?

Ken says:. Sorry we haven't the data readily available as to the number of women teams last year but the fastest women's team finished last year in 21hrs 27mins compared a women's course record of 14hrs 12m.

Si⮠Roberts | February 1, 2010 1:27 PM

Are there sections of the trail where dogs are not allowed to walk?
Ken says The walk takes place on public rigths of way so dogs are allowed but please check out the route in detail on our iteractive map on the website. We would not advise for dogs to walk the entire 100kms.

I am a lone walker looking for a team. Do you have a way of joining people up to make a team?
Thanks

Ken says It's great you would like to get involved in Trailwalker UK 2010. You can find Trailwalker UK on facebook and post a message that you are looking for a team. Good Luck !

I will be registering my team this week, and holding a team meeting on wednesday to get all contact details and answer their questions about the event. One question I know will come up, as we all belong to a running club, will be : Can we run the course, or at least walk run it?

Rick says: Hi Tim, you're welcome to run the route - the course record is 9Hours 50 Mins!.

Tim Caffyn | November 23, 2009 8:08 PM

Is there a course record for vetrans and if so what is it?

Rick says: Hi Paul - good question! I'm not sure of the fastest ever veterens time, I'll have to look ino this. The fastest time this year for a Veterens team was 13 hours 15 mins 12 secs. This was set by Team Szerelmey.

Paul | November 18, 2009 8:59 PM

Hi

If we cannot raise the £2500 and can only get pledges for say £1500, does that mean we cannot enter.

Thanks

Hi Terry. We are expecting teams to hit the fundraising target - (£2,300, not £2,500).

We've increased the fundraising target as part of a full review of Trailwalker. This works out at each member raising £575, less if your support crew help you to raise money.

I accept that we're asking for a reasonable sum - but it does compare favourably to other charity events, such as the London Marathon. Marathon runners are expected to raise between £1,500 - £2,000 each to secure a guaranteed place.

We also had a look at what other charities ask from similar events and found that £2,000 was a common amount for example both Marie Curie's Great Escape Challenge & the Caledonian Challenge and many of the 3 peaks challenges ask for a similar amount.

Ultimately we've made these changes to ensure that Trailwalker continues to be a fantastic fundraising event for Oxfam & the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

I hope that this makes sense and we can continue to count on your support.

Terry | November 13, 2009 4:21 PM

Hi
Can others join the teams to walk different stages, even if they aren't registered as team members?

Rick says: Hi Barry, people are welcome to join you, just as long as they don't carry you!. Just bear in mind if they are not a registered walker that Oxfam will have no responsibility for them.

Regards

Hi,

How do most of the support teams get around, we have some people willing to be support, but they cannot drive and how many times do the support crew meet you?

Thanks
Julie

Rick says: Hi Julie. Your Support Crew will need to be able to drive I'm afraid. Without a car they're not going to be able to get to all of the meeting points. I'd say on average Support Crews meet their teams about 6-8 times. Sometine to provide cleans socks, sometimes to provide cooked food. Happy hunting!

Julie | November 9, 2009 10:56 AM

can pregnant women take part?

Oxfam Rick says: Hi Danielle - I don't feel qualified to answer this question. My recommendation is that you talk to your doctor.
