Before Oxfam worked here, many people farmed on dry land rather than in swamps, often several hours' walk from their homes.

Oxfam gave people one plot (half an acre) of uncultivated land. We built and repaired dams and irrigation systems, so people could have control over how much water their farm receives. And we gave farmers tools, clothing, and training on how to manage their swamp farms and irrigate their fields.
