Curriculum links

This resource will provide many opportunities for work in the foundation subjects and in Eng S&L, as the focus for Y6 pupils in particular is so heavily on the core subjects in the weeks preceding the SATs. Below is a framework which gives an overview of the material to be covered during the course of the week. This can be shown to a senior management team, should you wish to check with them about freeing up five mornings or five afternoons for this work.

Day 1

Tsunami follow-up

Focus: Why are poor people the worst affected by natural disasters?

Focus: Children around the world share similar ways in which they have fun and entertain themselves, regardless of how much money they have (part 1).

 

Activities: Discussion, looking at photographs, captions and case studies.

Activities: Prepare and play games from the South. Find out more about the countries from which they come.

Day 2

Poverty and education

 

EITHER

Focus: What are some of the problems associated with being poor? Particular emphasis on poverty and education.

Focus: Poverty and education. Continue to consider why children may not get to school.

 

Activities: Look at photographs and case studies linked with education. Consider own experience of education and look at why some children are not able to attend school.

 

Activities: Look at the case studies of children who do not go to school.

OR

Focus: Children around the world share similar ways in which they make fun or entertainment, regardless of how much money they have (part 2).

 

Activities: Make a narrative scroll for a tale from a country in the South.

Day 3

Poverty and health

Focus: Poverty and health, with particular emphasis on the need for a clean water supply.

Focus: Poverty and health, with particular emphasis on the need for a clean water supply.

 

Activities: Look at photographs and case studies linked with health. Note the importance of a clean water supply. Use ICT material to learn more about water and present research to the rest of the class.

 

Activities: Extend work of morning on water using ICT. Make watery pictures, posters and/or write a water poem.

Day 4

Fair trade

Focus: We all share responsibility for making the world a better, fairer place. Particular emphasis on fair trade.

Activities: Use maps and food labels to understand where our food comes from and see the links we have with other parts of the world. Look at banana production and carry out a role-play activity to understand the trading process from farmer in the South to consumer in the North.

 

Activities: Choose from the following options -

  • Plan to run a fair trade stall.
  • Make fair trade posters or leaflets.
  • Enact the journey of the banana.
  • Make chocolate biscuits, or banana cake.

Day 5

Making a difference

Focus: We can make a difference.

Focus: We can make a difference.

 

Activities:

  EITHER

Activities: Consider ways in which pupils might ‘Have their say’ about poverty issues. Discuss the Make Poverty History campaign.

 

Plan what the class/whole school could do for White Band Day 3 (10 December) or plan to run a fair trade stall.
  OR
 

Continue to make banners, leaflets or posters.
