The devastation caused by the Indian Ocean Tsunami on 26 December 04 was enormous. More than 290,000 people died and millions of survivors’ lives were shattered.

“This tsunami is not the biggest in recorded history, but the effects may be the biggest ever because many more people live in exposed areas than ever before . . . “
Jan Egeland – UN Emergency relief coordinator

Oxfam’s response

It is hard to start again when you have lost so much but Oxfam is working with communities in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, the Andaman and Nicobar islands, the Maldives and Somalia to help people do exactly this.

Case studies

Coir pits - Oxfam is helping women in Sri Lanka restart their coir businesses following the devastation of their livelihoods by the tsunami.

Cash for work - Oxfam is paying communities to clear the land of debris left by the tsunami and to mend boats to enable them to start fishing again.
