A week of activities for 9 to 11 year olds

Are you looking for stimulating and worthwhile activities to carry out with your class after half term? This year, our week of activities focuses on the football World Cup. Bring on the World provides a wealth of ready-to-use and flexible material based on the foundation subjects, and is ideal for use after the SATs.

The World Cup takes place in June and July this year, and is sure to be a hot topic with your pupils. Bring on the World explores the context of the World Cup, from the countries taking part in the competition to the trade issues behind the sporting glamour. From the initial starting point of the World Cup, pupils will focus on three themes throughout the week: competition, teamwork and thinking skills . They will also have the opportunity to develop their research skills while studying some of the countries involved in the World Cup finals.

Bring on the World can be used to fill either:

Five mornings (2.5 hours x 5)
OR
Five whole days (2.5 + 2 hours x 5)

The extension work for the afternoons follows on from the morning, but is not essential for the next morning’s work.

All the information and worksheets you will need for each day will be contained within an easy-to-print pdf.

View the scheme of work for quick reference.

The three themes of Bring on the World

Competition

Football is a competitive game. Pupils will be given a variety of opportunities to consider both the positive and the negative aspects of competition, through their own school experience (by considering recreation activities and engaging in a mini-football competition), and through thinking about competition in the wider world (for example in the sportswear industry). Pupils will be encouraged to see that competition both locally and globally can have complex effects.

Teamwork

Being able to co-operate successfully with others is an important interpersonal and social skill. This resource provides a variety of ways in which children can work together to research information, to investigate issues and to communicate their findings with others.

Thinking skills

The ability to think critically and solve problems is another important life skill. This resource provides a number of different opportunities for pupils to think about real-life problems (such as conflict in the playground) and to consider solutions for themselves. Bring on the World also enables pupils to challenge stereotypes about people and countries, enabling them to form more balanced views.
