Background information for teachers
Morning
Today's activities introduce pupils to the World Cup and to the
32 countries whose teams have qualified for this year's finals. Pupils
will begin to work in small groups ('teams') to generate questions about
some of the countries playing in this year's tournament. Much of the emphasis
in Bring on the World is on encouraging participation and teamwork,
giving pupils the opportunity to work in teams and to reflect on what
makes a successful team (and what does not!).
Pupils will use Oxfam's new Mapping Our World
online resource in order to become more familiar with the location of
different countries. Mapping our World also helps them to understand
the relationship between globes and maps and takes a look at how different
world maps represent the size, shape and position of countries in different
ways. These differences can influence our perceptions of the relative
importance of individual countries.
Afternoon
The afternoon's activities allow pupils to work in pairs to explore
world maps in more detail. Then, in groups, pupils will begin to find
the answers to some of the questions they asked in the morning about countries
playing in this year's World Cup.
