Caroline's chores

“On school days I get up at 6 o’clock. I pile the bedding to one side and I sweep the floor, inside and outside. I can sweep like that, from side to side, while I am still waking up! At school we also have jobs to do in the mornings. We sprinkle water to keep down the dust, and sweep out the room.

At home in the evening, after I’ve eaten, I’ll wash the dishes and help my aunt cook supper for the rest of the family. I grind the simsim paste. At times my aunt has already prepared supper, and then she tells me to get on with any homework.
At the weekend I fetch water, and wash my uniform and other clothes. Sometimes I go to work on the shamba (in our village), with my aunt and my sister.”
