Caroline's chores |
“On school days I get up at 6 o’clock. I pile the bedding to one side and I sweep the floor, inside and outside. I can sweep like that, from side to side, while I am still waking up! At school we also have jobs to do in the mornings. We sprinkle water to keep down the dust, and sweep out the room. |

At home in the evening, after I’ve eaten, I’ll wash the dishes and help my aunt cook supper for the rest of the family. I grind the simsim paste. At times my aunt has already prepared supper, and then she tells me to get on with any homework.
At the weekend I fetch water, and wash my uniform and other clothes. Sometimes I go to work on the shamba (in our village), with my aunt and my sister.”
