Health and hygiene

Caroline’s home has no mosquito nets. It's not unusual for people to get very ill or even die from malaria in the camp. Recently, Caroline’s two-year-old cousin Lucy died from malaria. Caroline herself suffers bouts of malaria. She says “The last time I suffered from malaria I was dizzy and felt cold. I went to hospital in town and took medicine.”

It's difficult to wash in the camp. Caroline's Aunt Filder explains: “Before Oxfam came with its tapstands, we had to fetch water from up the hill. We would take three or four hours waiting in the queue at the borehole to get just one jerrycan a day for the whole family. By the time you came back, it was late to start cooking. We could hardly wash ourselves or our clothes. Since Oxfam came, I can get three jerrycans without waiting, and we have enough water. The tapstands have made a huge difference to everyone."
