Caroline's leisure time |
“One of my friends has a ball, so we play netball. If she’s not there, we play seven stones. Scovia and I often visit each other, and read storybooks or just chat. I like the animal stories best – with hyenas, hare and lion. Hare is my favourite, because he’s clever.” The stories are based on the verbal story-telling tradition of many African cultures. |

“If the radio is there, and we have batteries, we listen to music. Sometimes we listen to music in the local language, or English singers like Jennifer Lopez or Robbie Williams, and rap music.
I only go to town if I need something. If I had money I’d buy storybooks to read and a ball to play with, and shoes and clothes. I only have one pair of shoes, and they are worn out. Otherwise I have three T-shirts and three skirts, and one dress for best.”
