Florencio and his family grow sunburst pumpkins, which take two
months to grow from sowing to picking.
They also grow broccoli and other crops. OPCION has encouraged
them to plant in cycles so that they do not become too dependent
on any one crop.
OPCION has also helped to set up an irrigation system, based on
pressurised spring water from the mountains, so they can grow vegetables
all year round, not just in the rainy season.
Florencio works on the land, looking after the irrigation system,
weeding, planting, and harvesting vegetables. He says: ”Working
with OPCION has made my life better. Now I can work the land in
the morning and go to school in the afternoon.”
