Most people in Guatemala make a living from farming. They grow
food for their families to eat and anything left over is sold at
local markets.
The traditional food crop in Guatemala is maize, which is cooked
and eaten as tortillas (a sort of maize-flour pancake)
or tamales (maize cooked with meat or vegetables). Tomatoes,
onions, and beans are also grown there.
Some farmers are now trying to grow other crops that they can export
to the richer countries of the North. This allows them to earn more
money to spend on food, health care, and education for their families.
