Oxfam helps people change their lives
Every single person in that room wanted to be something better than their parents. They didn’t want to have to work in the factories, being paid nearly nothing. They wanted a better life then that. I asked one girl what she wanted to be and she said that she wanted to be an engineer, others talked about being soldiers or computer workers. This really impressed me. I realised that the only way to break the cycle of poverty is with education. The children that I was with weren’t desperately poor but because they had been educated, they wanted something better. I was really touched by how we were welcomed and how lovely the children were.
Oxfam has helped those who were on the verge of giving up to make a life worth living. The Oxfam staff and partners work extremely hard and they have got a very good result. I was really touched when I saw what they had done and when I met all the people involved: volunteers, workers and the cotton pickers alike. When the cotton pickers met us they started singing and they put flowers and leaves in our hair. I have never felt so welcome. They obviously feel as if Oxfam has helped them completely change their lives for the better.
Oxfam has worked amazingly in this project and though I am sure that they work just as well in most of their other projects too, I can only speak of what I know. As far as I know Oxfam has made a hugely positive impact on the lives of all the cotton pickers, weavers and everybody else that they have worked with. The last thing that I have to say is that I truly hope that they continue to do so.
