Visit to the children of garment workers

In Bangalore, we went to see some children whose parents worked in the garment factories. (We were not allowed to visit the factories themselves). We sat down and introduced ourselves. They had gone to a summer club over the holidays which was held by Oxfam. They were very excited and they all said how much they had enjoyed it. The first thing that amazed me was how good their English was. They could talk very easily to us and we had a good conversation. They showed us a piece of work that they had done. They had designed a town as they would want it to be. It was very interesting as they had things like television and radio stations.
‘I felt really happy being with these children who were just like me’
We asked who had a TV, radio and telephone and they all put their hands up for all of them. Afterwards they showed us some toys they made and sang us a song. They were very good at singing and they sang the song in three different languages. Afterwards they asked us to sing and we had not been expecting that. We sang very badly and it was extremely embarrassing. When it was time to leave they gave us some pictures and they were all about peace. It was very sweet and I really felt very happy being with these children who were just like me. They liked all the same things as me.
