From Newcastle to Nyamikamba

We flew from Newcastle to Amsterdam on 18 January. Then we flew to Nairobi (Kenya) overnight, and after a long six-hour wait we met the Oxfam Press Officer who joined us for the flight to Kigali (Rwanda). We arrived in Kigali at about midday and were met at the airport by Stanley, the Oxfam driver, who drove us to our guesthouse.

Killing time on the journey
Killing time on the journey

Driving through Kigali I was struck by the volume of people. Everywhere I looked there seemed to be people walking by the side of the road or riding about on bicycles. The temperature was about 28 degrees (or more!), but luckily there didn't seem to be any mosquitoes, even though I was told that it was mosquito season. We were tired from the long flight and spent most of the day recovering and settling into the guesthouse.
