There are so many weapons in the world today that it's estimated that there is one gun for every ten people on the planet. Every year, roughly half a million men, women, and children are killed by armed violence - that's one person every minute! "A gun is as easy to get as a packet of cigarettes." Evan Jean Lolless, 34, serving life imprisonment for murder in the USA, 1997 Today weapons are more powerful and deadly than ever before. They are so easy to get hold of, they often get into the wrong hands. Oxfam belongs to a group of organisations campaigning to make it harder for people to buy weapons. Unless governments introduce tighter controls to stop the spread of arms, more people will suffer, more lives will be lost, and more people will be denied the chance the escape poverty. What we are calling for :
