What do we want to change?

Campaigners for the Control Arms campaign

There are so many weapons in the world today that it's estimated that there is one gun for every ten people on the planet. Every year, roughly half a million men, women, and children are killed by armed violence - that's one person every minute!

"A gun is as easy to get as a packet of cigarettes." Evan Jean Lolless, 34, serving life imprisonment for murder in the USA, 1997

Today weapons are more powerful and deadly than ever before. They are so easy to get hold of, they often get into the wrong hands. Oxfam belongs to a group of organisations campaigning to make it harder for people to buy weapons. Unless governments introduce tighter controls to stop the spread of arms, more people will suffer, more lives will be lost, and more people will be denied the chance the escape poverty.

What we are calling for :

An international Arms Trade Treaty to make sure that weapons don't fall into the hands of the wrong people.

Governments to introduce new laws to monitor the use of arms and to prosecute those guilty of mis-using weapons.
Local communities to collect and destroy excess and illegal weapons.
The introduction of new human-rights standards for police officers to prevent weapons being used illegally.
