The Tamachek nomads
of Gao in Mali, West Africa lived their traditional life of herding
cattle and moving from place to place. They used to be ignored by
those in power. When a severe drought killed most of their animals,
they were forced to settle in a village.
Oxfam supported
community workers like Mohammed Hamed Abba (pictured) to help the
new villagers to improve their standard of living. Thanks to Mohammed,
the Tamachek have learned about their right to vote for government
representatives, to ensure their needs are met. Now they won't be
ignored.
'I wish you
could come back in ten years,' says Mohammed. 'Then you would see
how much these people will achieve, and how their lives will improve.'
