Oxfam helps provide shelter and clean water to people whose lives
have been turned upside-down by disasters such as earthquakes or
floods, or by war.
Within 13 hours of hearing about an emergency 30 tonnes of life-saving
equipment can be sent from our emergency warehouse to any airport
in Great Britain. This equipment is then ready to be flown to where
it's needed.
After an emergency, we help people to rebuild their lives and to
be better prepared in the future. This can mean raising whole villages
beyond the reach of floodwater, or building strong houses in areas
where there is a risk of hurricanes.
In 2000, over a quarter of a billion people were reported
to be affected by natural disasters such as floods or hurricanes.
