Oxfam provided
food and shelter to people fleeing the crisis in Afghanistan at the
end of 2001.
Even before
this crisis, we were assisting in the running of refugee camps for
people who had had to get out of Afghanistan because of drought
and fighting. With the US bombing, many more people had to leave
their homes to stay in these camps, which are mainly situated in
Pakistan.
We had to close
our offices in Afghanistan for a few weeks when the situation was
at its most dangerous. However, following the surrender of the Taliban,
we were able to begin our work again.
Most important
is the delivery of food to people who need it, but we are also assisting
in the running of schools, and doing other work.
The children
in the photo are pictured shortly after their arrival at Roghani
refugee camp in Pakistan in November 2001. They were refugees from
the American bombing in Afghanistan. Discover what life is like
for them in the photostory - Life
as a refugee.
