Peter Makfero Hamilton from Malawi has been selling fish since
1981. In the past, he was badly off, and found it difficult to afford
proper food and clothes for his family. Before primary school education
became free in Malawi, he had to pay for his children to attend
school.
He and a group of friends founded a credit scheme called Chikondano,
which lent money to people to help them expand their businesses.
Oxfam gave money to the scheme.
Peter was granted a loan, which he used to buy more fish and make
a better profit. Now, hundreds of families have benefited from the
scheme, and have worked their way out of poverty.
Peter Makfero Hamilton says, 'Credit is a good way out of poverty,
because most people who get a loan are able to improve their lives.
People used to have a lot of problems here, but now they can meet
their basic requirements.'
