This boy in the
picture is watering the vegetable garden at his school in Kampong
Cham Province, Cambodia.
Each morning,
children water the garden, and the vegetables grown there help supplement
the free breakfasts which are given to the children every morning.
There are just
over 500 pupils at the school, nearly half of them girls. The pupils
attend school in two shifts, morning and afternoon. The free meals
attract pupils, and the absence has fallen dramatically since they
were introduced so much so that the school is in danger of
becoming overcrowded.
The school is
partly funded by the government, but it also receives vital funding
from non-govermental organisations (NGOs) including Oxfam.
Part of the
money provided by Oxfam goes towards scholarships which enable families
to buy uniforms and equipment so that their children can attend
school.
