Tony Robinson :‘On the side of the angels’

In the summer of ‘98, Tony went to Brazil to visit a community who have fought long and hard for their right to a livelihood -- to collect nuts from the common land, and to make soap from the nut-oil.

For the last ten years, Oxfam has been funding a local organisation called ASSEMA to help the nut-collectors and soap-makers to develop new Fair Trade products and to find new markets.

Tony freely admitted that he hasn’t been the world’s greatest champion of Fair Trade. Before he went, Tony was heard to say, "It’s a good idea and certainly on the side of the angels, but it’s a lot of hard work and I don’t think it really achieves very much".

So has anything changed? What does he make of Fair Trade now - now that he’s seen it from a different angle?

Here Tony tells the story of one small community that he met in Brazil, and reveals his new-found thoughts on Fair Trade.
